This one is peeving me because I was almost certain the movie I'm looking for had Ryan Reynolds as the protagonist but after searching his whole filmography, apparently not. I believe it is a 2000's film and it had a mumblecore style to it. The plotline is about two university students or postgraduates that met through the father of the girl (a teacher at the university) being friends with the male protagonist and had them over together. The female is a virgin and wants him to take her virginity but he is much older and declines repeatedly. I also recall some scenes about a patronising bookwork that became apologetic and then suicidal which the male protagonist mentored in a way after realising he was reading a book he head read (I believe it was infinite jest). The male protagonist was also interested in poetry, and studied his degree in that iirc.

Sound like The Paper Chase, though it's '73 and she's not a virgin.

That's it, thanks. I'm not sure why I thought it was Reynolds
