My knowledge of African cinema is pathetically slight, but the two particular films I have seen (Ousmane Sembene's
Ceddo and Souleymane Cisse's
Yeelen) were both superb, and I recommend them to anyone. Right now, I'd much like to see both
Black Girl and
Xala, which are probably two of the more well-known ones. I also have the DVD of
Moolaade that I need to watch, and will be watching
A Screaming Man soon -- which I rather look forward to.
District 9 seems like it should qualify as well, no? One of the best sci fi films I've seen in the last 15 years.
I dunno. An apartheid film by people who blatantly couldn't give less of a shit about apartheid? Movies like
Day the Earth Stood Still [51],
eXistenz and
Attack the Block have much more to say, and are more well-made to boot. I thought District 9 was disingenuous, conventional crap.
Amandla looks quite interesting though.
