African Cinema

Postby Svengali on Wed Aug 15, 2012 10:29 am

As the title suggests, African cinema. Most African cinema seems to be more or less unknown to most people, it'd would be nice to gather up some films in a collection. African director is a must, preferably shot in Africa with African actors as well.

Of course, Egypt and Morocco and all those countries as well.

The problem with African movies is that I doubt they can live up to the awesomeness of their trailers;

:lol: I see CGI in Nollywood has come a long way since I last watched a movie from there.

Well one really great film from South Africa is Amandla: A Revolution in Four Part Harmony.

Another excellent South African film is Stander, which is based on a true story about robbing banks.

District 9 seems like it should qualify as well, no? One of the best sci fi films I've seen in the last 15 years.

Anyway those are just three off the top of my head...

My knowledge of African cinema is pathetically slight, but the two particular films I have seen (Ousmane Sembene's Ceddo and Souleymane Cisse's Yeelen) were both superb, and I recommend them to anyone. Right now, I'd much like to see both Black Girl and Xala, which are probably two of the more well-known ones. I also have the DVD of Moolaade that I need to watch, and will be watching A Screaming Man soon -- which I rather look forward to.

I dunno. An apartheid film by people who blatantly couldn't give less of a shit about apartheid? Movies like Day the Earth Stood Still [51], eXistenz and Attack the Block have much more to say, and are more well-made to boot. I thought District 9 was disingenuous, conventional crap.

Amandla looks quite interesting though.
