Hate it or love it

Post by comepelicula »

I was wondering which movies had like a U shape in the rating stats to see which movies had the most polarizing effect, but is hard to find a movie like that, they tend to be in a bell shape.
I turned to the internet to find movies that generally people love or hate and when you say "I hated this movie!" someone else is going to say "What are you talking about??? that movie was great".

So this is a collection about movies that people generally hate or love and have a very strong opinion about them. There might be some movies that are not suppose to be in this collection, but is a matter of opinion.

Strange, most of those that I've rated are 70 which is my "Hollywood Average".

One exception is Avatar, which I'm sure is polarizing, but it polarized me as well. I loved the art of it and the fx/3D, but hated the marxist politics, over-the-top, absurd bad guys, and the simple-minded pagan religion. So I split it down the middle with a 50.

Yea, I was questioning that myself so it doesn't turn out a collection about films I think are overrated/underrated. Generally I've added movies that appear in lists on the internet.
About Avatar as you said the effects where very good but I was so bothered about how dumb the plot was I ranked it with a 35, generally I've heard people that love it or hate it.

But I think I have a winner: "Salò, or The 120 Days Of Sodom" by Pier Paolo Pasolini has mostly tier 10 or tier 1 votes and definitely people have a strong opinion about it.

Films with most polarized rankings? could be a data source.

The most bipolar films found in that thread seem to be http://www.criticker.com/film/Blue_1993 and http://www.criticker.com/film/Zeitgeist_The_Movie.

Can't believe that thread was from early 2012.

Those are some great suggestions.
Definitely http://www.criticker.com/film/Zeitgeist_The_Movie has al lot of haters or lovers.
The forum threat was a great source and also is interesting to see how "300" ratings have aged; it has gone from flat to slightly bad.

This is a nice list

https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/icheckmovies+movies+most+likely+to+cause+a+flame+war/mjf314/

But some of those movies are in the category “so bad they are good” and have reach the bad movie cult status, so there is a general consensus that they are really bad movies but people love them.

The one most interesting for me was http://www.criticker.com/film/Satantango/ (I haven't seen it) because it says it is a polemic film, but seems to have a lot of love from criticker's users, maybe it's not a movie for the general public

Most of those don't make a lick of sense. Troll 2, Birdemic, The Room, Justin Bieber's concert movie, S Darko, My Sassy Girl US remake? What? Even the ones that he "thinks" are controversial, like Rent, really aren't.

who thinks what? the list is simply based on comparing the number of favourites with dislikes on iCM.

Thanks for pointing this out; not familiar with the site. However, that just underscores the problem with the methodology.

And it explains why all those famously bad movies like Troll 2, Birdemic, and The Room are on there. No one would "start a flame war" over any of them, contrary to what the list claims. It's just that a relatively small portion of people have it as an ironic favorite while others, despite finding amusement for the same reasons, still click "dislike". There is no fundamental disagreement there.

I think a measure of the standard deviation for a movie, or more simply, the number of ratings in T8-T10 verus T1-T3 and what percentage both of them make of the total ratings, would divulge far more information.
