Are exploitation films based on current events still made?

Postby nauru on Sun Jun 03, 2012 9:17 pm

I'm just thinking of a couple of really great stories for trashy exploitation films which have been on the news recently (and actually are still in the news).

One is the trayvon/zimmerman saga. Seems like an obvious money-maker due to the huge amount of press and emotionally/racially-charged controversy surrounding the story.

The other is this recent/still-developing story from Montreal about a transsexual gay porn star cannibal who lured a chinese university student into his apartment and then chopped him into pieces, ate part of him, mailed some of his body parts to political party offices, and left the headless, limbless torso in a bag to rot on the curb with the rest of the week's garbage while he fled to France.

(Yes there are better news sources, but given the trashy nature of this thread I think it's fitting to post a link to a commensurately trashy publication)

Do any filmmakers still cash in on news stories? These two seem too perfect to pass up, and I'd surely watch a film based on either of them.

If you like fact-based cannibal stories you should probably check http://www.criticker.com/film/Cannibal/ I think there was one more film about this case, but can't remember the title right now.

Here's another film about that famous case.

Most impressively though, we got a great Rammstein song out of it!

Would not be surprised if someone's already written a zombie film where the first attack happens like that.

Also Magnotta isn't transsexual, nor a porn star, since I don't think appearing in several borderline-amateur porn videos makes one a "star", though admittedly I may have no idea what it takes before one is considered a porn star!

I think all those 9/11 movies that came out in recent years are pretty exploitative, even if it's not what you mean.

So i saw the "making of" and than this, i understand a few ideas from the video, but some are unclear. The woman role is kinda confusing, after all it's about a guy eating another, from a true story, not about struggle against your personal.

Dude, it's a Rammstein video. They're weird, crazy, stylish as hell, and feature awesome, catchy music. Don't focus on the symbolism; just enjoy the experience.

Agreed. You can add all the war films as well. Exploitation in it's true sense.
