Movies with the worst special effects

Postby HorrorMaster on Sun Feb 15, 2009 9:53 am

"Legion of the Dead" (2001)

I haven't actually seen the movie but there is one scene in particular which I saw a still of on the back of the DVD cover at Blockbuster and it was so horrendously bad that I almost shat my pants right then and there. I haven't been able to find any pictures of it, but it's in this trailer at 0:39. There is nothing....nothing worse/better than bad CGI. It's a drug almost.

But out of movies I've actually seen, there is not another movie which even comes close to "Dagon" (2001). It's not a bad movie; hell, I loved the thing...but there's one scene where I almost burst into a fit of hysterical laughter and features an absolutely horrible CGI-rendering of some sort of hydra thing shooting out of a woman's mouth:

Why was 2001 such an awful year for special effects?

Wow, this "Legion of the Dead" looks great! And it's directed by Ittenbach. A must see!
For me bad special effects are fun in cheap & trashy films. But if it's some mainstream and high budget flick in which CGI sucks it's really annoying for me. Immortel (ad vitam) was a complete nightmare. 3D animation was so bad that I turned it off after ~10 minutes cause it was pain for my eyes.

I love the head exploding effect in that. One bullet and that guy's whole head just turns straight into tomato juice. The less said about the emerging head thing at 0:40 the better.

I recently saw a 2005 telemovie with extremely poor CGI effects. It was entitled Supernova (not the Walter Hill movie). I have added it to Criticker but it is still in "Preview mode." The movie is in fact poor in all possible respects.

In general, I find CGI special effects to be very uninteresting. As far as special effects more generally are concerned, in my view it has been downhill ever since 2001: A Space Odyssey. That's a forty year long downhill slide.

2001 was the year that Fellowship of the Ring came out, and really got Weta Workshop kicked off, so I'd say it was probably one of the better years for special effects, at least recently.

i find it pretty funny the "legion of the dead" you said that has terrible special effects, and i've seen another with the same name that has miserably bad special effects.
