While HorrorMaster continues to create "post your favourite" topics incessantly, I would like to promote the Singaporean film 12 Storeys, directed by Eric Khoo. It is a drama with hints of black comedy and is set in the day in the lives of three residents who live in the same government-run apartment block. It employs close-ups extensively and features excellent cinematography. If anyone wants to discover Singapore cinema (the popular are largely terrible), this is the best possible way to start.

tier 10:
The End of Summer
Harakiri
Kagemusha
Rashomon
Red Beard
Seven Samurai
Tokyo Story
Woman in the Dunes
Yojimbo

tier 9:
Early Spring
The Face of Another
Fires on the Plain
The Hidden Fortress
I Was Born, But...
Kill!
Kwaidan
Late Autumn
Oldboy
Onibaba
Pather Panchali
Pitfall
Sanjuro

Only two films later then 1968, I do need to correct this but I doubt there's many who stand up next to the likes of Kurosawa / Ozu.

Surely you mean Kurosawa/Kobayashi. Teshigahara would also be acceptable.

All my top Asian movies are Japanese:

Tokyo Story (93)
Samurai Rebellion (90)
Human Condition (85)
Sonatine (85)
Woman in the Dunes (85)
Yojimbo (85)
High and Low (80)
Ran (80)
Rashomon (80)
Seven Samurai (80)
Throne of Blood (80)

There are large gaps in my viewing experience here, even in terms of the great Japanese directors. I am of course very fond of Kurosawa movies, however I don't consider any of the Kurosawa movies I've seen to be masterpieces. On the basis of the few movies I've seen, I tend to believe that Ozu and Kobayashi are probably greater directors.
