On a separate issue, do the recommendations take into account the movies seen by your closes TCI's or do they just go for any movie with a high PSI no matter if it was ranked by your 980, 981....990th TCI?

I don't care - I don't have a dog in this hunt. I just joined this site yesterday. If you are bored, look at my recommendations (I think they are visible). I started ranking the System Reccomendations with "10's" to try and shift it away from the direction it was heading. You tell me if those recommendations are from the same group of people who highly ranked my high picks.

Yes, they are. The problem is that the recommendations page isn't set up the way you're thinking. The recommendation page puts out movies at random from the set of movies that those with "similar tastes" liked. It neither shows you your top recommendations (that's the PSI page here: http://www.criticker.com/?fl&filter=op ) nor does it in any way filter based on genres, year or country (you do that manually).

Here's a handy link just for you: http://www.criticker.com/?fl&view=all&f ... 9zf1980zop It's only post 1980 US films that have at least 50 rankings (Well-known or higher) you can change these filters on the left to your liking.

That said, what critical favourites have you disliked, and have you rated those?

qwerty3656 wrote:I ranked 500 movies. I like basic guy movies like Braveheart or Gladiator. I also like basic comedies like Airplane or Groundhog day. The movie reccomendations I get are a bunch of foreign films and documentaries that I am confident are nothing like the movies I ranked highly.

Have others had a similar experience?

I agree with you to an extent. I see most mainstream movies as they come out, before there is any real consensus here, using mostly R/T, IMDb and trailers to make a judgement. I come here to rate it and if there is a recommendation it's often off, considerably. I don't pay any attention to the Psi's. What is helpful is the compilation of the rankings under a given title along with the comments for a movie, as well as reviews and discussions like this. A lot of members I often disagree with always have some movies in common with me, and vice versa.

One thing I've been round and round about with people hear about is subtitles. Call it a disability if you want, but I can't pay close attention to the visuals while reading the damn things, and inevitably miss a lot of the subtle stuff. But I do keep an eye out on what's playing at the "art house" here in phoenix. it's an hour away, but usually has been worth the trip with a little digging before I go, including here.

He has seen some very different films. He doesn't like them. They are his Shrek 2.

Yes.
Would a limit on TCI mitigate? Or, instead of Your Top 1000 TCIs, a top 200 TCIs? These aren't questions for qwerty, obviously.

I'm more than a little rusty on how Criticker works. Oxydizd.

Well, he did say:

So we don't really know what he's seen. Not that it's particularly relevant. It seems he's seen and liked
It's a Wonderful Life , Lawrence of Arabia, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Citizen Kane, Dr. Strangelove and The Wizard of Oz. So he doesn't seem totally averse to non-recent movies and I'm sure he'd like at least some of those recommendations. But if he doesn't want to watch them yet then that's up to him.

They usually work and I have used them sometimes for choosing what to watch, however, and maybe because of my habits of rating everything ridiculously highly (my T10 average is 98) Criticker tends to believe that I automatically will adore every praised movie, which in the end leads to the biggest failures in the system of recommendations (for example with Capra's It's a wonderful life and Arsenic and old lace: 96 PSI to 59 as real score in the first case, and 90 to 53 in the second).

In my opinion we need to take Netflix recommendation engine and Critickers Ratting system and combine them (plus critickers statistics). That would be perfect. In fact I primarily use Netflix to recommend content to me and Criticker as a better way of cataloging the movies I've seen.
