Re: How are your custom ratings set up?

I just revamped all my ratings, after thinking about how tiers work, and considering how few "bad" movies I rate. Now every 10 out of a 100 is a new tier and my quips are much closer to what Criticker's defaults are.

95-100 (Tier 10) Masterpiece
90 T10 Great
80 T9 Excellent
70 T8 Very good
60 T7 Good
50 T6 Decent
40 T5 Okay
30 T4 Flawed
20 T3 Subpar
10 T2 Poor
5 T1 Bad
0 T1 Terrible

Sometimes if I've noticed a tier disappear, I try to add movies with a certain rating or tweak some ratings slightly to keep it tidy. Obssesive-compulsive of me I know.

95+: Holy fuck, I need to masturbate.
90: Fantastic. Will start fights over.
80: Very good. Some top movies of the year. Should see in theaters.
70: Good. Would recommend to others. Probably enjoy seeing it again after a few months.
60: Enjoyable. Fills a niche. Watchable with the right mindset. Not too bothered if other people dislike.
50: Alright. I enjoyed it once but don't want to watch it again.
40: Below average. Bearable once, though I'd make fun of people who liked it.
30: Cringe-worthy. Can only sit through if I'm allowed to vocally make fun of it.
20: Will actively try to leave the room. If in theater, will find an excuse to not stay in seat.
10: Will actively attempt to stop the movie or otherwise prevent others from watching it. Will wait in car or outside.
Less than 10: Grounds for divorce. Friendship ender if someone actually likes these films.

I don't know how you managed to figure out how many of each film you had ranked. I know that I've got 4 95+ films and 4 10 or less films. My problem when it comes to rankings is that I enjoy most movies, so most movies end up in the 70's. Even movies I dislike I still enjoyed the first time through. For example, most Michael Bay films are awful, but I am entertained while the movie is on to some degree, so a lot of those will end up in the 50's and 60's.

100 - Top 10 (10 Rankings)
95 - Top 50 (40 Rankings)
90 - Top 250 (200 Rankings)
85 - Excellent (313 Rankings)
80 - Very Good (437 Rankings)
75 - Good (439 Rankings)
70 - Pretty Good (597 Rankings)
65, 60, 55 - Average (637 Rankings)
50, 45, 40 - Bad (553 Rankings)
35, 30, 25, 20 - Awful (270 Rankings)
15, 10, 5, 0* - Dire (261 Rankings)

This is the first time I've looked at my rankings from a statistical point of view. Interestingly enough - and completely coincidentally - if you total my rankings from 100 down to 80 it equals 1001 movies, so I suppose I could write my own personal version of those 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die books :)

The brackets containing the most films are Average, followed by Pretty Good - which is to be expected, I suppose. There are 1084 movies rated Bad, Awful or Dire which is about 29% of all the films I've seen.

* I'd also be interested in seeing how many films people rate 0. Most of the time I can find something I like about a film, but I've become more intolerant the more films I've seen over the years and sometimes I find certain films as a whole so irritating or objectionable that only a 0 will do. I've rated 204 films a 0, which is 5.4%.

Anyways, here is mine;

85 - Masterpiece (64 Rankings)
77 - Excellent (122 Rankings)
70 - Good (329 Rankings)
60 - Decent (346 Rankings)
50 - Alright (250 Rankings)
40 - Mediocre (182 Rankings)
30 - Bad (215 Rankings)
20 - Garbage (200 Rankings)
10 - Utter Shit (96 Rankings)
0 - Apotheosis (29 Rankings)

Let's see how this has changed over time!

85 - Masterpiece (66 Rankings) (There have actually been 4 new films I ranked 85+ since 2012. However, I deleted the extended cut of "Apocalypse Now" from my rankings, realizing I had actually seen a different, albeit longer than usual cut, and I lowered Audition from 85 to 80)
77 - Excellent (145 Rankings)
70 - Good (363 Rankings)
60 - Decent (400 Rankings)
50 - Alright (265 Rankings)
40 - Mediocre (201 Rankings)
30 - Bad (234 Rankings)
20 - Garbage (224 Rankings)
10 - Utter Shit (102 Rankings)
0 - Apotheosis (29 Rankings)

Clearly, my movie-watching is becoming better and more efficient, as there has been a larger increase (especially percentage-wise) in "Excellent" movies, than for Mediocre, Bad, or Garbage movies.

"Decent" had the biggest increase, followed by "Good". Garbage had a higher percentage increase than I would hope for, but considering most of them were decently or even highly regarded movies that ended up massively disappointing, it will be hard to avoid in the future.

the details of my scoring system are a complete mess at the moment, but the levels go like this:

91+: masterpiece (48)
80+: great (149)
70+: very good (173)
60+: good (172)
50+: okay (192)
40+: poor (148)
30+: bad (114)
<30: terrible (111)

there are ten movies i have in the single digits, which generally reflects that i find them ethically despicable, though of course there are plenty of other questionable (or worse) films with higher scores. those ones just get particular hate from me for whatever reason.

I changed them recently (after a few attempts). Due to my scoring habits, the tier system doesn't represent my feelings on what I watch.

100. Awesome (247)
90. Great (346)
80. Very good (397)
70. Good (379)
60. Fine (282)
50. Watchable (132)
40. Weak (72)
30. Bad (36)
20. Terrible (17)
10. Abysmal (15)

I tried to apply a 0-100 scale, but it was a complete mess. I'm used to 1-10 ratings.
