Wow! More than 10% of your ranked films are by a single director. I'm sure you've seen way more than you've ranked, but that's still pretty crazy

Been more than two years for me...and it seems a few changes to my list.

Jesus Franco - 39
Kenji Misumi - 16
Takashi Miike - 16
Steven Spielberg - 16
Yuen Woo-Ping - 14
Kinji Fukasaku - 14
Lucio Fulci - 13
John Landis - 12
Terry Gilliam -12

Fukasaku and Misumi creeping onto my list by virtue of the Yakuza Papers and Zatoichi series respectively...and Spielberg actually lost a film since my last post as I deleted my rating for Empire of the Sun, which I thought I remembered seeing but actually haven't.

My love of weird smut, samurai, and kung fu flicks all pretty evident there. :)

Antonio Margheriti - 6
Jack Hill - 6 (+1)
Andy Milligan - 6
Dario Argento - 6
Francis Ford Coppola - 6
William castle - 6
John Landis - 6
Bert I. Gordon - 6
Charles Chaplin - 5
Ridley Scott - 5
Yimou Zhang - 5
Chan-wook Park - 5
William Witney - 5
Tom Laughlin - 5 (previously less than 5)
Michael Findlay - 5
John Waters - 5 (previously less than 5)
John Carpenter - 5
Robert Altman - 5 (previously less than 5)
Brian De Palma - 5 (previously less than 5)

That's +17 (8 by Corman alone) for the directors already on the list with only 4 directors previoulsy not on the list.

I really gotta watch/re-watch some Fulci and dive into some D'Amato.

Considering I have seen a respectable number of films, is it strange that there are only 4 directors, excluding cartoons, that I have seen 10 or more films by, and none more than 17? (Spielberg, Landis, Coppola, and Woo)

I think it makes sense given the way you describe your decision on whether to watch a movie or not. I could be wrong, but I seem to recall noting that you did not include the director as a factor in your decision. I would venture to guess most of the rest of us do include that. For me, if there's a contemporary director I like, I'll check out anything they make (e.g., Christopher Nolan).

Actually, the director is one of the main things I look for in a film. Maybe the main one.

Hmm, I wonder why I was thinking that then. Well, then, to answer your original question, 4 isn't that few. You've ranked a lot of animation, which you excluded, and a lot of shorts, which (I'm guessing) don't tend to be by feature filmmakers. After those exclusions, I think we have a similar number of rankings. For me, there are 10 directors on my list, and they are all big name Hollywood types (Kubrick, Tarantino, Hitchcock, Spielberg, Coen bros, Zemeckis, Kevin Smith, Ridley Scott, Tony Scott). Other than Zemeckis, Smith, and Tony Scott, the rest of the list are directors for whom I'll watch anything they've made.
