This is a topic to my liking. :)

Tiers 10 - 8:

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog (2008) - 100
Alice in Wonderland (1951) - 90
The Lion King (1994) - 89
The Wizard of Oz (1939) - 89
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999) - 88
West Side Story (1961) - 88
Singin' in the Rain (1952) - 87
Cannibal! The Musical (1996) - 86
Grease (1978) - 82
Hairspray (2007) - 80
Industrial Symphony No. 1: The Dream of the Broken Hearted (1990) - 80
Mamma Mia! (2008) - 77
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Ba... (2007) - 77

For the fun of it, my least favorite (Tiers 1-3):

Hair (1979) - 23
Chicago (2002) - 21
High School Musical (2006) - 21
Tommy (1975) - 21
Saturday Night Fever (1977) - 20
Hairspray (1988) - 17
Captain EO (1986) - 16
High School Musical 2 (2007) - 15
Dreamgirls (2006) - 9
Grease 2 (1982) - 1

I notice my ratings (at least my top ratings, my least favorites seem pretty in order) are somewhat skewed, and I should probably alter them.

Criticker classifies some pretty crazy shit as musicals (Autumn Sonata? seriously?). So I've filtered out the ones that don't fit the bill (documentaries, concert films, things that just aren't musicals at all), but left in a few that are borderline like Wicker Man.

The Hole (1998) - 99
The Wicker Man (1973) - 98
Singin' in the Rain (1952) - 96
All That Jazz (1979) - 95
Linda Linda Linda (2005) - 93
The Wayward Cloud (2005) - 93
The Wizard of Oz (1939) - 93
The Blues Brothers (1980) - 92
Pink Floyd The Wall (1982) - 92
Pure Heart a.k.a. Pakeezah (1972) - 92
Leningrad Cowboys Go America (1989) - 90
Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) - 90
One Hour with You (1932) - 90
Love Me Tonight (1932) - 88
South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut (1999) - 87
Freedom for Us a.k.a. A Nous la Liberte (1931) - 86
The Muppet Movie (1979) - 86
Cabaret (1972) - 85
Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001) - 85
The Happiness of the Katakuris (2001) - 84
Le Million (1931) - 84
Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog (2008) - 83
The Love Parade (1929) - 83
Swing Time (1936) - 83
Industrial Symphony No. 1: The Dream of the Broken Hearted (1990) - 82

I honestly hate musicals, and im not talking about the random movies that unexpectedly insert a musical piece into it, like many Disney movies are notorious for. Musicals such as High School Musical and Hairspray make me want to vomit. Most of em just get under my skin, but there are only a few in which i do like only due to the fact that it actually plays music i enjoy.

Across the Universe
Pink Floyd: The Wall
Fantasia
Fantasia 2000

I love how like 50% of people seem to hate musicals with a passion for no good reason. What's the reason behind it? What's not to like? Movies, good. Music, good. Clearly, the result will be doubly good. :P

All kidding aside, I'd like to know what the beef is people have with musicals. Are they too cheery and optimistic? Can you simply not cope with characters randomly breaking into song? Do you hate on-stage musicals, such as broadway productions as well?

I love all musicals with a passion, somewhat out of the good + good = twice as good formula I jokingly provided above. I don't see a problem with them at all, although like all movies of course some aren't very good; Grease 2 is a disgrace to all mankind and actually features a musical number in which a guy drags a girl into a bunker and sings a song about how they must have sex "for America! for freedom!" because he has tricked her into believing the Russians are invading the country. It's one of the most offensive scenes I've ever seen in a film, and I can't really explain why.

I'm pretty enamored by a Fred Astaire film. Sadly, I see too few.

It's a sensitive genre, imo. A "broadway" nasally voice feels like my brain's being grated. When a musical mentions "Jazz", it's usually a pasty, vulgar, style-less interpretation of jazz. But when done right, musicals are wonderful. I'm kicking myself over how many times I've missed Meet Me In St. Louis. Most of them are love/hate, though, so well-rated Astaire performances aside, I doubt I'd pay for musical DVDs.
