Postby paulofilmo on Fri Apr 11, 2008 3:06 pm

A good night in.

ON SKY ARTS tonight:

8.30pm Nocturna Artificialia (FILM) 1979 Short animated film directed by the Brothers Quay about city life at night, as seen through the eyes of a dreamer who boards a tram car for a fantastical journey

8.55pm The Cabinet of Jan Svankmajer (FILM) 1984 Short animated film directed by the Brothers Quay, following a pincer-handed puppet professor who empties out the contents of a young boy's skull before teaching him about illusions and perspective — finally rewarding his pupil with a brain of his own

9.10pm This Unnameable Little Broom (FILM) 1985 Puppet animation by the Quay Brothers in which a bird-like creature becomes fascinated by a painting, not realising it is bait to lure him into a horrific trap

9.25pm Rehearsals for Extinct Anatomies (FILM) 1988 Stop motion animation by acclaimed directors the Quay Brothers, featuring a fantastical ballet of apparently abstract shapes and darkness

9.40pm The Comb (FILM) 1990 Surreal stop-motion animation from the Brothers Quay. The film opens with an image of a sleeping woman, then delves into her dreaming mind, in which a doll-like figure explores a labyrinthine playhouse

10.00pm In Absentia (FILM) 2000 Animated short by the Brothers Quay, in which a tormented woman consigned to an asylum attempts to write a letter — but her efforts seem doomed

10.20pm Petroushka: The Animated Ballet Award-winning 1956 animated adaptation of the Stravinsky work, in which the composer himself conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic

10.35pm Led Zeppelin A 1969 concert by the band, recorded shortly before they shot to international fame. Tracks include How Many More Times and Dazed and Confused

11.10pm The Caretaker (PG) (FILM) 1963 Classic screen adaptation of Harold Pinter's psychological drama, which was first performed on stage in 1960 and helped establish his reputation as one of Britain's most important playwrights. Donald Pleasence stars as a conniving tramp, who invades the lives and home of the mentally ill Aston and his sadistic brother Mick. With Alan Bates and Robert Shaw

Not to worry, they were abstract and quite demanding. The music was excellent.
