If you find the traditional French genres boring, start by checking out anything with Luc Besson's name on it (writer, director, or producer). His films are not always good but they are generally action- or suspense-driven. And pretty much the opposite of the formula you described.

Try A Man Escaped. It's an older film and an entertaining precursor to The Shawshank Redemption.

I can almost guarantee this guy isn't going to like A Man Escaped.

But I generally don't like French films.

The culture disconnect will make learning the language more difficult. How did you come to be in this situation?

Haha, yeah it isn't for everyone, but sometimes unexpected films can hit home.

My situation arises from the fact that I am Canadian and didn't get a choice regarding which language I would learn second. Achieving fluency in French was not much fun, so I'd prefer to maintain it rather than let all those years of study/practice be in vain. Reading and writing are still fine, but these days I can feel my speaking vocabulary deteriorating from lack of use. So I figured film might be a pleasant way to counteract that.

To be honest, I was actually hoping some of the recommendations here would be for French language films where the setting is in French-speaking countries other than France, and the main characters are not from France. (Not enough space in thread title.) Since France is only 1 of 29 French-speaking countries in the world, I don't expect my lack of interest in the culture of France would keep me from maintaining my French language skills.

Criticker PSI puts A Man Escaped in my Tier 9.

And prison break films are one of my favourite kinds.

Think I will check it out.

Hmmm... of the 36 films from Luc Besson on Criticker, I have seen 6 of them. All received low scores from me  . Especially the Transporter. But I will keep Besson in mind.
