Notable missing directors

Postby djross on Mon Oct 25, 2010 9:14 pm

I've seen many great films by many great directors, but thus far I've never seen any movies directed by any of the following well-known filmmakers:

Gillian Armstrong
John Cassavetes
Chen Kaige
Aki Kaurismäki
Ki-duk Kim
Sergio Leone
Pier Paolo Pasolini
Guy Ritchie
Victor Sjöström
Béla Tarr
Josef von Sternberg
Apichatpong Weerasethakul
Yoshishige Yoshida
Yimou Zhang

If its true that the movies we choose to see say something about ourselves, then no doubt these absences also reveal something, although I'm not sure what.

Off the top of my head, I've never seen any Antonioni, Ozu, Renoir, Kiarostami, Rohmer, Ophuls, Kusturica, Dreyer, Fuller, Chaplin, Keaton, Argento, John Ford, Tarvoksky, Mizoguchi, Teshigahara, Powell (or Powell/Pressburger), Bela Tarr, or Cassavetes.

But I love me some Kim Ki-duk and Weerasethakul.

I've been quite lucky/prolific in seeing one from almost all the big names, but there are still a lot outstanding:

(in order of priority)
Robert Bresson
John Cassavetes
Bela Tarr
Hou Hsiao Hsien
Chen Kaige
Lindsay Anderson
Tony Richardson
James Whale
Otto Preminger
Carl T. Dreyer
Joseph Losey
Alejandro Jodorowsky
André Techiné
Marcel Carné
Brothers Quay
Christoffer Boe
Lina Wertmüller
Max Ophuls
Josef von Sternberg
Glauber Rocha
Laurence Olivier
Bille August
Lodge Kerrigan
Pier Paolo Pasolini
Chantal Akerman
Derek Jarman

PS: if anybody hasn't seen a Rolf de Heer they need to add him to their list, stat!

Who's that? Never heard of her and PSIs are not very impressive.

Of the TSPDT Top 200 Directors, I have seen nothing by the following directors:

66. Douglas Sirk
111. Theo Angelopoulos
136. Michael Snow
142. Ken Loach
145. Zhang Yimou
149. Ritwik Ghatak
151. Claude Lanzmann
154. Peter Bogdanovich
159. Sydney Pollack
161. Frank Borzage
163. Francesco Rosi
169. Ben Sharpsteen
174. Ousmane Sembene
176. Manoel de Oliveira
178. Charles Burnett
191. Claire Denis
192. Tobe Hooper
194. Dario Argento
197. Shohei Imamura
198. Louis Feuillade
200. Cecil B. DeMille

A good mix of mainstream and arthouse directors are missing on my list, but I expect to clear a few of these in the coming weeks.

Out of the ones listed so far in the thread:

Gillian Armstrong
Alexander Kluge
Ettore Scola
Claude Autant-Lara
Lucio Fulci
Jesus Franco (except for his edit of Welles' Don Quixote)
Christoffer Boe
Bertrand Blier
Lina Wertmüller
Clarence Brown (saw The Yearling, but it was ages ago and I might not have seen the whole thing)
Alfred E. Green
Walter Lang
Cheh Chang

There are several others that I've only seen one film by, and probably not their best one.

Off the top of my head, I have not ranked anything significant directed by

Lucio Fulci
Mario Bava
Yasujiro Ozu
Federico Fellini (ugh...)
Billy Wilder (segment of "Casino Royale" doesn't count)
Francois Truffaut
Sam Peckinpah (I have watched part of "Convoy", but I don't think that really counts)
Cecil B. DeMille (don't feel too bad about this one)
Carl Theodore Dreyer (since he was the initial inspiration for my favorite director, Sidney Lumet)
John Ford
John Huston (segment of "Casino Royale" doesn't count)
Bernardo Bertolucci
Abel Ferrera
John Cassavetes
