Then I found out it was Duncan Jones' second film, so I immediately had a look at the trailer and I'm pretty impressed, mainly by the rather cool storyline. It's definitely got kind of a Nolan feel to it. I'm looking forward to it now, for sure.
But what's with the comparisons of Moon to 2001? They're not alike at all.
Along with the homages throughout that were mentioned, the trailer was also very '2001'. I saw the trailer and was thinking 'well, it looks pretty good but it looks like it's just going to be the HAL plotline from 2001'. It wasn't, it was a very unique movie in its own right. The atmosphere was certainly inspired by the likes of 2001, Silent Running, etc. After seeing it, I would say Silent Running and Blade Runner influenced it more than 2001, but going I definitely thought it was going to be 2001.
Jones seems to respect cinema. I expect inspiration from Le Jetee, but I also expect it to be its own movie.
