I'm trying to decide how Jeff Bridges best acting nominee will be handled. Will the academy not dare to give him the win because it’s the same role Wayne won best actor for, will they give it to him because liberal Hollywood hates The Duke, or will it just be ignored for another political win?

I'd argue that the original True Grit is not one of John Wayne's best films (though it's pretty good), and that his Academy award for it was more a "life time achievement" award than for anything particular about his True Grit performance. I can't imagine them denying Bridges just because someone else already won an Oscar for the same role.

In fact, Jeff Bridges was so much better than John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn, I can't see how they could justify NOT giving him the award.

- Anything related to The Kids Are All Right is gross
- Andrew Garfield is a massive snub, especially with Renner/Ruffalo finding their room in the nominations, nice to see Fawkes though
- Weaver is gross, fuck Animal Kingdom
- Wish either Kunis or Hearshey got a nod. Also Steinfeld should be in the main actress category, hate how they submitted her as supporting.
- I haven't even watched Biutiful but am glad Bardem got a nod
- Coens don't deserve a directing nomination, whatever you thought of Inception, I thought a nod for him was a sure thing
- Glad 127 got a writing nod
- Fuck yeah Exit Through the Gift Shop!
- Btw Firth is the sure fire winner even though in my ideal world, Eisenberg would get it.

And

Social Network gonna sweeeeeeeeeeeep

If Bridges wins again, I hope he gives a long, rambling speech while really stoned like he did last time. That was pretty funny.

This also bugged me too. Her role is more important and she gets more screen time then Bridge's, so if he gets a nomination in the main acting category, so should she.

I think you are laboring under the impression that the academy awards aren't a political animal. Which they are.

Fair point.

I need to learn to keep my mouth shut about stuff I don't know much about. I have very little interest in awards shows and give them zero credence, so my ruminations on the Oscars are pure speculation of little to no actual value.

That being said, a Western winning Best Picture would make me smile.

8-)

I've only seen like 3 and 1/2 of the best picture nominees (the half being The Kids are All Right, which I didn't really like, but I did think Bening was good). I'm kind of surprised that Mila Kunis wasn't nominated for best supporting actress (I mean Steinfeld made a great debut, but IMHO it wasn't worthy of this nomination). I have my nominees I'm pulling for like considering that Nolan wasn't nommed I'm hoping Aronofsky will take home best director, but judging from other awards it seems like Fincher has that locked up. I really hope Portman wins for Black Swan, but other than that I can't really judge because there are a lot of films I haven't seen.

Edit: I also cannot believe that True Grit got 10 nominations, 2nd only to The King's Speech, when IMHO Inception and Black Swan were better films.
