Top 10 highest-scoring actors (10 film minimum)

Postby djross on Sat Jul 09, 2011 1:45 pm

What are your top ten actors, as determined by average film score and with a ten-film minimum? Of course, it goes without saying that appearing on this list does not mean these are your best or favourite actors, yet such a list may be revealing in one way or another.

Mine are as follows (I have counted Groucho, Chico and Harpo as simply the Marx brothers, as they all have an identical average derived from an identical set of movies):

1. Liv Ullmann (84.10, 10 films)
2. Bibi Andersson (81.70, 10 films)
3. Fred Astaire (79.13, 15 films)
4. Erland Josephson (79.00, 10 films)
5. Humphrey Bogart (78.00, 12 films)
6. Diane Keaton (76.08, 12 films)
7. Marx Brothers (75.58, 12 films)
8. Mia Farrow (74.76, 17 films)
9. Martin Scorsese (74.73, 15 films)
10. Udo Kier (73.17, 12 films)

No doubt the actors in positions one, two and four reflect my fondness for Bergman. On the other hand, they are all great actors.

Get ready for the manliest list ever:

Toshiro Mifune (87.5, 15)
Chia Hui Liu aka Gordon Liu (87.31, 13)
Tatsuya Nakadai (86.82, 11)
Sammo Hung (83.81, 21)
Chow Yun Fat (81.50, 10)
Yuen Biao (80.59, 17)
Donnie Yen (78.67, 15)
Ian Holm (77.73, 11)
Lee Marvin (77.0, 15)
Charles Bronson (76.67, 12)

The 5 of the top 7 are kung fu stars and the other 2 are samurai movie stars :P

Also of note, you've got to go all the way down to slot #8 to find a non Asian actor...and then it's...Ian Holm? Weird.

At least Marvin and Bronson made the cut. :)

1. Al Pacino - 75.46 - 13
2. Philip Seymour Hoffman - 74.91 - 22
3. Alec Guinness - 74.27 - 11
4. Emily Watson - 74.00 - 11
5. Bill Murray - 71.85 - 276
6. Robert De Niro - 71.23 - 22
7. Clint Eastwood - 70.21 - 24
8. Sigourney Weaver - 70.00 - 14
9. Frances McDormand - 69.91 - 11
10. Jack Nicholson - 69.64 - 11

I did make one exception. Top of my list with a minimum of 10 films is actually John Ratzenberger with 81.58 from 12 films. They are all voice acting however and some are minor roles. I like his work voice acting a lot, but it just didn't seem right putting him on the list.

This is my list

Actor Ave # of films
Hugh Grant 73.67 12
Al Pacino 72.92 13
Morgan Freeman 71.60 10
Samuel L. Jackson 70.93 15
Sandra Bullock 70.62 13
Robert De Niro 70.52 23
Stephen Tobolowsky 70.00 11
Edward Norton 68.73 11
Bruce Willis 68.65 26
Jim Carrey 68.00 10

However, averages calculated this way make no sense. They should be calculated by averaging Tier Points like how PSIs are.

This must be due to Lars von Trier and your strict avoidance of all the trash he's been in.

Correct: nine out of the twelve Udo Kier movies I've seen were von Trier movies. The other three were the three lowest-scoring movies of the twelve. But he's great in some of those von Trier films.

Okay, so let's try that:
Actor - (Avg. Score / Avg. Tier) - #
John Cusack - (92.30 / 8.50) - 10
Bruce Willis - (84.80 / 7.10) - 10
Tim Robbins - (80.10 / 6.90) - 10
Bill Murray - (83.08 / 7.00) - 12
Joan Cusack - (81.64 / 6.73) - 11 (from Toy Story 2 to Toys)
Steve Buscemi - (81.80 / 6.60) - 10
Brad Pitt - (83.44 / 6.56) - 16
Winona Ryder - (82.90 / 6.20) - 10
Geoffrey Rush - (79.30 / 5.90) - 10
Gene Hackman - (82.40 / 5.80) - 10

Bruce Willis, Tim Robbins and Geoffrey Rush all qualified through movies seen in the last week. Man, I'm such a child of the 80s/young adult of the 90s.

Bottom of the list:
Arnold Schwarzenegger - (70.50 / 4.5) - 10 (The Long Goodbye!)
Robert De Niro - (64.75 / 4.13) - 16
Tom Cruise - (61.64 / 3.82) - 11
Julia Roberts - (60.36 / 3.57) - 14
Robin Williams - (53.79 / 3.50) - 14
