Can't beat a movie where a dude throws a baby elephant through a plate glass window. I watched both the original and the 'recut for American audiences' version and about the only major change is that the elephant gets thrown BUT it doesn't crash through the window. WTF?

The US version is almost half an hour shorter and chops out a bunch of story and one subplot completely. It doesn't really touch the action (except the elephant tossing shot), but at least the Dragon Dynasty DVD has both versions.

Was it one of those infamous Miramax hatchet jobs?

I believe so....I blame the Weinsteins.

Also, glad to see I'm not alone in thinking that Princess Mononoke was the best film of 97.
