Moneyball

Postby ayall on Sat Nov 19, 2011 3:59 pm

Recently saw this, thought it was good not great. (i.e. didn't live up to the hype)

I don't really follow sports, not that big into baseball, and I definitely don't participate in any of those fantasy baseball leagues.

The story/plot was interesting and may give the viewer a decent history of the origins of fantasy baseball and its credit to the sport.
I would credit Aaron Sorkin, who's proven his talents at writing/screen play, and will likely get some recognition for his work in this film.

I didn't think Brad Pitt or Philip Seymour Hoffman did anything overly spectacular in the acting department, i would put them at just about par. Pitt seemed to use the same accent as he did in Inglorious Bastards, and many times (oddly) reminded me of that character. Hoffman didn't have as much time on screen, but did a good job holding up the supporting role.
For both, most could easily name at-least 5 movies that the acting performance was better by Pitt & Hoffman then Moneyball.
I was surprised by Jonah Hill's performance; I enjoy his acting in the Comedy Sector, and it was interesting to see him play a more serious role.

Overall this fell into my Tier 8; but I am very curious if there are any fantasy baseball addicts who watched this film, and what their opinions are...

This is a pretty poor analysis of the film but I guess I can get behind most of it. But this:

was just wrong. 100% wrong and flat out untrue.

...anyway, it's not wrong.
The Characters are obviously different, don't misunderstand my point.
Anyone with any sort of skill at measuring actors talents and roles variation will agree that the accent, the tone and basic delivery expression used in this film(at times) by Pitt can easily be correlated to his character portrayal in Inglorious Bastards.

There is a specific scene I can us as a good example to my point; that's the one where Pitt is talking to the character "justice" at the batting cage. (about 80 minutes into the film)

It is wrong, let me remind you cause clearly you've forgotten:

In Moneyball he just sounds like Brad Pitt and in Basterds he sounds like a dude from the south. And since you said he was using the same accent, you are wrong bro. :ugeek:

It's eerily similar in that it's the same guy's voice.

wasn't just the voice... it was also the delivery...

maybe it's just me, i've see IB so many times, but there were just certain moments i coulda have easily imagine that it was Aldo, 50 years later, working for the A's.

Anyway, i'll just put it this way... during the movie, i didn't once think of the character in 12 monkeys.

yeah, Brad Pitt is a decent actor but he doesn't have much range. That clip you posted of 12 monkeys only proves this. It's clearly the Pitt voice but he's just doing crazy things. Maybe it has more to do with the fact that you've watched IB so many times that you've imposed that persona on to him wherever he goes because the accents in both films are obviously different. It also could be that Pitt looks significantly different today then he did 15-20 years ago (watch Thelma and Louise, he looks like a woman in that movie). Even in 12 Monkeys he's skinnier and more youthful looking and the effects of smoking haven't started to show on his face like they are now.

Watched Moneyball. I still don't have a clue what a 'base' is or what a 'walk' is, but I still enjoyed the movie. Ranked it T9, #1 amongst the 9 2011 movies I have watched till now.

No, I am not - though I have spent 5-6 years there.
