Game Changeng - Dramatized Documentary?

Postby ayall on Mon Mar 12, 2012 8:49 pm

This is an interesting TV-movie, and reminded me a bit of the movie W. in a way (the dramatized portions).

While this is an obvious dramatization, it made me think about the line between fact and fiction in these types of films.

The movie used tons of actual footage from various characters involved in the subject matter/film which at times made this movie seem like a documentary.

For example, at times, I didn't know (nor is the viewer suppose to know?) if they were looking at the real characters or the actors portraying the characters; a specific example of this would be when Palin first meets Biden for the main VP Debate.

Julianne Moore did a great job with her portrayal of Palin.

I thought it was pretty entertaining. Moore is getting most of the accolades but I thought Harrelson was great.

for what it's worth, I usually assume about half of the stuff that happens in "real" documentaries is staged anyways.

Moore, Harrelson, truth/fiction not discernable, do I need to ask where it was going?

I thought it was an excellent film. It seemed very sympathetic to both McCain and Palin, but especially Palin.

Before watching the film, I thought Sarah Palin was suffering from some kind of mental illness; something slightly milder than mental retardation.

After watching Game Change and doing a bit more reading on Palin I've come to see her as a well-intentioned but profoundly ignorant person who was at first overwhelmed by the spotlight and then comitragically consumed by it.

The whole debacle reminds me a bit of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. The political scientists in the republican party, in their efforts to create the perfect presidential running mate, select an oblivious redneck to infuse with the best that republican political science has to offer -- catchy slogans, attractive wardrobe and effective debate tactics among them. But in their arrogance these scientists ignore the risks of their experiment and accidentally create a monster who runs amok.

I don't even know where to begin with this amateur psychologist trainwreck of a post. Palin was/is no different than Obama; they're both young politicans with no real experience or accomplishments made popular by gimmicks unrelated to their actual ability. (Palin is an attractive woman, Obama is half black) Difference is that one ran for President and the other for a far less important office that typically has little direct influence, Vice President. And of course, one is Republican, so she is demonized, and other is Democrat, so he is deified by the US media.

I don't like Palin in the slightest and disagree with her on many issues, but the number of factually incorrect and baseless statements in your post are incredible. (Since when is an Alaskan a redneck, by the way?!)

I will just note that Palin's most notorious "idiocy" about dinosaurs was a lie concocted by a blogger and then blindly repeated on SNL and everywhere else;

http://www.watchfreeepisodes.com/sarah- ... years-ago/

(Mind you, this is a LIBERAL site and a very LIBERAL host, Anderson Cooper, admitting it was a bullshit Internet rumor)

Meanwhile, there are videos like this which that same media ignores. Can you imagine the field day they would have if any Republican said something so stupid?

If/when they make a well shot and well acted film about Obama, or Santorum, or Kucinich or Paul or any other American politician that I recognize and find interesting, then provided the writing & editing have better pacing than J. Edgar I will probably watch those too.

Out of curiosity, what do you find interesting about Kucinich?

I once voted for him as a joke in the Democratic primaries, and affectionately referred to him as the "the Littlest Commie" when recounting certain political anecdotes. (He is all of 4' 11" and an unabashed communist) I wasn't aware that anyone saw him as something other than a fun curiosity.

There isn't anything specific about him that makes him 'interesting'... I think it's holistically the combination of his life experience, political platforms well outside the American mainstream, 2008 primary campaign, and also his short stature in a country such as the US where very high cultural value is placed on athletic ability and height, which together make him an interesting fellow to watch a film about. Even if they made a film about the inner workings of his 2008 campaign I'd watch it. I've never seen a film about an American primary before.
