So, watching this film, I was loving it. It starts off as a pretty dark comedy, then gets really dark, then essentially ceases being a comedy completely, with the final third reveling in nihilism and violent destruction. That being said, I was somewhat disappointed with the tacked on happy ending/epilogue that flew right in the face of this darker tone.
At the climax, Rainn Wilson infiltrates Kevin Bacon's house and subdues him, and Bacon says something along the lines of "Killing me won't make the world a better place." and Wilson says "There's only one way to find out." Then he started stabbing Bacon repeatedly as Liv Tyler shrieked hysterically, and then the scene faded out to a red screen...I actually said out loud "That better be the fucking ending", because it would have been the perfect way to cap off such a sick and delirious film. It would've perfectly encapsulated Wilson's misdirected rage and pathetic short sighted morality. I was disappointed when it continued, and really disliked the actual ending.
It didn't need story threads tied up, it didn't need to linger on the aftermath of the rescue, and it surely didn't need such a sugary sweet outcome for everyone involved (barring Ellen Page, of course). I rated the movie 75 (T8), but it would easily have been a 90 (T10) if it had ended with the fade to red. You can't be so nihilistic and then wimp out at the last second.
Anyone else who saw this film have any thoughts on the ending?
