Modern Times (Short Film)

Postby Spunkie on Thu May 10, 2012 8:40 pm

A short I've worked in the production of has entered vimeo staff picks half an hour ago, it's literally raining hits since I'm used to way fewer for my mappings etc. Please direct your comments to vimeo so that the director can receive them. https://vimeo.com/41700765

Each shot's composition was quite appealing - the street shot at the beginning in particular. Was this storyboarded faithfully, with virtually no deviations from it?
Buddy's face - great - eventually (and hilariously) running the gauntlet of emotions - maybe a much, much, subtler version of Rowan Atkinson?
I like the editing after he logs into facebook, and Spunkie - the soundtrack coming in at the five-minute mark is absolutely perfect, matching the tone of buddy's quotidian travails to a T and most definitely warrants good headphones. (were those oboes and cornets or something goin on?)

Like I said you'd better direct it to the director, this is his debut and he'd be more than happy to receive them. Afaik he's incredibly calculating in every sense, shooting a simple film with universal appeal is a part of his plan. No it was not storyboarded, but he takes every chance for field exploration to get the exact images he sees in his mind months before the shoot. I especially like how he trascends limitations with clever technical approaches. This is shot by canon eos 550d, a lower end camera. Mr. Bean comparison is coming in comments, I'm not sure if it was intended, but there certainly is a resemblance. All sound on the film is artificially added, I think it doesn't feel so, is it?

By the way I bleeded a lot in order to get rid of moire effect on the guy's jacket. Various professionals told me there simply is no way to do it then reshoot.

A trivia: the room at the end is my collagues house, we work there day&night for the last 2 years. The book he holds is a general cinema analysis book I bought way back when I got interested in cinema.

vimeo rocks, good on ya for using it.

I'm not generally into shorts, but I really liked it.

Technically sound. steady camera work, very good lighting, sound was there, nice cinematography, above average cutting/editing. Actor reminded me of Mr. Bean, being silent and all, but overall good.

Likely to your credit; good production.

Brutal, Constructive Criticism;
the opening quote was cut to short, you should have it narrated over opening scene (which drags). I would recommend starting the opening scene dialog/quote right after the (opera?) music.
Use a sexy female voice in non-english (i would recommend sticking to a romance language).

As I mentioned above, actor/ing reminded me of Mr. Bean, not to diminish the value of your film, but to be honest about perceptive popular opinion... you might not get full credit for originality with this looming. I would use some who looked different but acted the same, perhaps a blond actor.

Lastly, I also think you should end on the wink/smile/swivel, the additional scene is very anti-climatic. I would cut at (7:23).

Thanks for making it!
