2012 So Far....

Postby Stewball on Sun Jun 24, 2012 2:25 pm

With Brave coming in as another (2nd Pixar in a row) disappointment (along with Moonrise Kingdom and Safety Not Guaranteed recently), the first half of 2012 is turning out to be as shallow as a lot of people think 2011 was, for me anyway. On top of that, 4 of my top 6 best (all of my 9/10 ratings) are from 2011, with 3 never even making it to general distribution. Que WTF Pasa?

Moonrise Kingdom was a definite disappointment, good to see I'm not the only one; I am still attempting to watch Safety not Guaranteed, though. Are you a fan of Anderson's films?

As for 2012, Indie Game: The Movie has probably been the best release so far. However, it was only in my seventh tier. Still, it is definitely worth a watch. 2011 was much better with The Kid with A Bike and Midnight in Paris being my films of the year.

So far so good actually.

I expect this to be a good year, and it's lookin' like it will meet or exceed expectations so far.

I recently saw American Reunion, which was a decent sequel if you liked the original (containing same main characters).
Also just caught Cleanskin which was a slow starting, but overall good action filck.
The Avengers was a good comic book movie.
John Carter was good (coulda been great, but atleast good).
The Hunger Games was also good.
The Dictator was funny if you like Sacha Baron Cohen. Not as far out as Borat & Bruno.
Project X was cool (a better version of super-bad).
Wanderdust was ok if you like paul rudd.
The Vow entertaining at best
Lockout & Contraband kinda sucked as action films go, but were watchable.
Chronicle was also watchable
This Means War sucked.
How to Sell a Banksy sucked.
Big Miracle worst film of year.
Saw some others which sucked too, won't even mention them.

Also, caught Aziz Ansari: Dangerously Delicious which was funny.

I haven't seen Prometheus yet, but the TED talks promo in-itself has made this film amazing already.

I haven't seen the films you guys mentioned, and will likely stay away based on the reviews.

Chronicle was even better than I was expecting. Same for Game Change.

When I saw a trailer for it in theaters, I honestly thought it was an Onion-style parody. When Drew Barrymore hysterically exclaimed, "whales are just like people; they feel pain and sadness just like us!", I burst out laughing.

I kept waiting for the music to scratch and for it to be revealed as a big meta-joke. When it didn't, and I realized it was a real, honest-to-god, legitimate trailer, I wondered whether the idiots that green-lit the project are still employed. There was just no way this movie could make money.

And on that latter point, I was (thankfully) correct, as the picture lost tens of millions of dollars.

Nothing I've seen has been too amazing but the only thing that really sucked was Project X. Everything else was sorta meh-good.

Uh oh, I was preping myself for let down there. I'm not all fan of the previous ones, particularly 2 or 3, but I was hoping for a shot-in-the-arm from a new cast, particularly my sweetie, Emma Stone, even if she did revert to a natural blond (only her hairdresser knows for sure). We'll see.

Also I'm having my doubts about Dark Knight Rises (Nolan blasphemy, Bane???). On the bright side, Outcast looks good this weekend (Stone notwithstanding) and there's still a glimmer for The Bourne Legacy and Total Recall in the action blockbuster category anyway.

Two indies helped boost the end of the 6 months for me, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World and
Your Sister’s Sister. The latter is a dialogue film (which I like a lot, but a lot of people don't) and a non-guy-as-incidental semi-chick flick. Just sayin'. Indies are now 5 of my top 7 so far.

Yes, it is as awful as they get.
It will most definitely get my Razzie vote.

Truth.

Also just caught two good documentaries from this year;
"Jiro Dreams of Sushi" and "Indie Game: The Movie" (as recommended in this thread)
