I'm in the twighlight zone here!

Postby MrAccident on Fri Aug 03, 2012 4:02 am

This is suppose to be one of the biggest sites for movie recommendations?
If so - something here is definitely wrong!
I've joined today, and imported 111 film-ranks, from IMDB.
I don't understand some things about the site; and I hope, that is the reason, everything so far looks like a train crash.
In the "Best TCIs" section, when I visit my closest TCI - I don't see any special resemblance in movie taste. And actually I went to the worst TCI, thinking that it will be VERY different; but it wasn't that different from the best!
In the recommendations I see some random films; most with a question mark (which means they are not really recommended?!), some very very old films, and at the top - the movie "All that jazz"; which looks like something I don't ever want to see the trailer for, even.

I actually understood that there's probably a great correlation between peoples personalities, and their taste in movies; because I had a friend, that we had an extremely similar taste in movies. And we where really alike; and different from most people we knew.
And now it seems that I can't find a single person in thousands; or how ever many people there are here.

So what's going on here? Are there really, few users in the site; something I don't understand; is the system just not good; or what?!

BTW, the things I don't understand are: the "Generate 50 More TCIs Now" button, and the "Tier".

The system only really works well if you've rated a whole lot of films. This is because you want to have at least 100 films in common with another person before they appear on your TCI list imo.

Yeah man you are really unique. No one else likes T2 or Aliens.

Maybe try ranking more movies and you will see the wonder that is crittie

It takes a while after you first join for the site to work properly as the TCI's don't generate in full as you rank films. This is especially a problem if you are using the rank more films feature or importing like you did. Based on my initial experience the best way to get things going is to visit as many film pages as you can while you are ranking to help generate more TCI's, which is the source of the recommendations.

yep, I'll echo the comments of others and say that the recommendation engine, as excellent as it is, only really starts giving out great recs once you've rated a few hundred movies. That shouldn't take you long, though. If you're only working with a tiny pool of 100 films, the TCIs it calculates won't be great.

I think, at the default setting, you need to have rated the same 50 movies as someone else for a TCI to be generated. 111 movies is probably not enough (we only have 29 in common) to generate accurate results. If your having trouble understanding how Criticer works go to http://www.criticker.com/?te

Nope. I think the default is 10% common. i.e if you have rated 100 movies, you need to have 10 movies in common for a TCI generation.

Oops, you're entirely correct. I made the mistake of remembering my own 10% setting from a few weeks back. At 10% of your movies ranked, MrAccident, 11 movies is not gonna be enough to create accurate results. Rank another couple of hundred and you should start to see some progress.

I'd say that much easier way for now would be to just change minimum films in common to something very high, maybe even 50%.

MrAccident:
Go to: You -> Profile -> Update Personal Information -> Films In Common Minimum (3-50%) - change it to 50
Go to: Interact -> Generate TCIs and click Generate 50 Tcis few times
Finally go to: You -> PSI and click "Generate 50 more Psis now" and the results should be better.

Of course like others mentioned you need at least few hundreds of rankings to make the best out of Criticker, but I think my advice should help for a while (and when you finally rank more films remember to lower "Films in common").

Also - but I am not sure- the TCI's are not generated on the fly. I believe they are calculated nightly. So if you changed or added new rankings, you'll notice the differences the next day. This only matters if you have a few rankings (a couple hundred). Once you've rated over a 1000 movies new or changed rankings don't make a lot of difference.

For now I suggest you find some users with interesting or similar taste and add them as a kumple. When you're looking for new movies, look at their reviews at the info page.
