Re: 2012 movie watching

Post by Stewball »

When I go see The Hobbit today, it'll be my 114th movie I've seen in theaters this year. I usually don't bother rating the ones I watch on TV unless they're really good, or really bad.

The top of my list so far:
***10***
Shuffle (2011)
Detachment (2011)
Life of Pi

***9.5***
The Words
End of Watch
The Bourne Legacy

***9***
Chronicle
Act of Valor
The Flowers of War
Chimpanzee
Your Sister’s Sister
Savages
2016: Obama’s America
Won’t Back Down
Hyde Park on Hudson

By my count, I rated 252 movies in 2012.
Top rating: a tie between two action films, both rated 90/100, T10
The Raid: Redemption (2012) - Almost no story to speak of, it's 100 minutes of nearly continuous brutal, gory action that left me giddy as a schoolgirl...a metric ton of hideous violence is inflicted on the human body using guns, knives, machetes, tables, chairs, etc. There's also plenty of hand to hand fighting with vicious elbow/knee strikes and painful looking throws, and the choreography is lightning fast and expertly filmed. Pretty much required viewing for fans of action cinema.

Shaolin Mantis (1978) - A Manchu spy sent by the Qing Emperor worms his way into the household of an evil Ming loyalist by marrying his daughter, but the spy is soon discovered leading to a dazzling array of kung fu fights. The finale sees the spy develop Mantis Fist to counter the Ming grappling Shadow Style. The first half is all setup, but second half is non-stop martial arts action, with tons of cool weapons and several deftly choreographed two on one fights. David Chiang gives his best lead performance ever.

Lowest rating: a tie between two awful horror films, both rated 10/100, T1
A Darker Reality (2008) - A couple of stupid cops try to catch a pervert named Ghost who kidnaps and sexually abuses/mutilates women. This is low rent torture porn of the worst type. The story is nonsense, the killer is fucking lame, the cops are beyond retarded, and every single acting performance is the absolute drizzling shits...especially the victims. Also, the 'shocking' twist ending was something I had been expecting to happen since the 10th minute. Aside from a decent gore shot or two, this is total garbage.

Big Meat Eater (1982) - Boring piece of shit comedy/horror flick where the actors repeatedly interrupt the ludicrous proceedings to deliver awful amateur musical numbers. I barely it made it past the first 10 minutes. There's an obnoxious family of Romanian immigrants whose son speaks with a broad English accent. You can tell this turdheap was made in Canada because the mayor's office has a photo of Queen Elizabeth on the wall. The only points are for a couple of competent gore effects.
as for 2012 films, I've only rated 9, though I'll likely see The Hobbit before the year is out.
Top rating: the aforementioned The Raid: Redemption.

Lowest rating: 30/100, T2
Taken 2 - Well, Olivier Megaton ruined the Transporter franchise, and now he's ruined this one too. It's an interesting idea (families of the nameless goons from the first movie looking for revenge), but the execution is amateurish and awful. The bad guys are incredibly stupid, the dialog is insipid, and the music universally hideous. Much of this could have been forgiven, but the action is also crap. Neeson looks like he's barely exerting himself and the editing is a frantic mess. Avoid.
234 films so far.

The best one was Fellini's "Casanova" (91 - T10)- one of his best. I have no idea why it's so underrated.
Since recently I'm focusing on discovering Japanase erotic cinema I've also seen quite a lot of great pinkus. In T10:
Zoom In: Rape Apartments
Star Of David: Beauty Hunting
Uwakizuma: Chijokuzeme
Painful Bliss: Final Twist

Biggest surprise for me was "Cobra" which I absolutely loved - it's 100% "80s" in every second of it.
TCI=33 (T2) :arrow: huh what!?

Worst I've seen:
Titus Andronicus - film based on Shakespeare, with lots of gore. Sounds fun, right? But not coming from these talentless hacks. And not only it's a completely shitty film, it's 2,5 hour long shitty film!

Also T1:
The Sitter - it's kinda like bad 80s comedies which I happen to love, but without the charm & cheese of that era it just doesn't work.
The Porno Zombies - as tempting as it sounds, I warn you it's just boring, ther's no budget and absolutely nothing happens.
American Psycho - I hate how overacted it was. I know that was the point, but I just couldn't stand it.

I don't really keep track of what movies I watch each year, but as far as 2012 releases go, I've seen 25 films.

Tier 10-
Dark Knight Rises
Argo
Moonrise Kingdom
Seven Psychopaths

Tier 9-
The Avengers
Looper
Skyfall
Brave

Tier 8-
Cabin in The Woods
21 Jump Street
Bernie
Ted

There's still a lot of 2012 movies I want to see, particuarly The Master, Django Unchained, Zero Dark Thirty, and The Hobbit.

Best 2012 movie out of the ~20 I have seen this year was Barbara, Tier 9 for me.

I watched fewer films this year (especially full-length features) than any year of my life since I turned 7.

So far, I have watched 39 films, but of those, only 12 were full-length features. (And keep in mind 4 of those were in the past 2 weeks!)

The two best were Princess (2006) with 81/T10 and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington with 83/T10. Both amazing, all-time great films.

Among 2012 releases, I have seen three pictures;

Tier 7 (Decent):

Argo 68
Pirates:Band of Misfits 65

Tier 2 (Garbage):

One for the Money 25

While Argo was a pretty good picture, if it's one of the best of 2012 in Hollywood, then I didn't miss a damn thing.

According to my Listology Film Log, I've seen 358 feature films, 6 television films, 178 short films and 5 medium-length (31-59 mins) films as of today, which is more than any other year in memory for me.

10 of these have been 2012 films. Of those, only two have been positive experiences....

American Reunion is probably the best American Pie film of them all, coming out of a terrible opening stretch to resemble a kind of "Greatest Hits" package for the series, improved all the more by having more meaningful things to say than the previous efforts (not that there's anything necessarily new about it all). The other good film -- Resident Evil: Retribution -- is also the best film of its series. Paul W.S. Anderson's grasp of visuals and tempo impresses me more with each film. He's underrated by people who prefer verbosity to his type of kinetic excitement but that's their loss.

Anyway, overall, the best films I saw this year were:

1. Casualties of War (Brian De Palma, 1989) -- Has all the aspects you could want from a great war movie: emotional and moral complexity, classic acting, astonishing visuals and unflinching grimness. Confirmed Brian De Palma's place as one of my favourite filmmakers.

2. In a Lonely Place (Nicholas Ray, 1950) -- The perfect character drama and tragic romance, intensely directed by Nicholas Ray, whose Bigger Than Life is now top of my must-watch list.

3. JLG/JLG (Jean-Luc Godard, 1994) -- A unique, alternately sombre and comic autobiography from cinema's greatest poet. Everybody should see it.

4. Godzilla (Ishiro Honda, 1954) -- The ultimate monster movie.

5. Rope (Alfred Hitchcock, 1948) -- An brief but wonderfully ambitious exploration of the criminal mind, executed with the tensity and visual panache one hopes to find in any Hitchcock.

6. His Girl Friday (Howard Hawks, 1940) -- Strings together so many zippy one-liners and quips with such great timing and effectiveness as to eclipse even most of the good comedies that come out nowadays. I'm only just beginning to discover Howard Hawks' work, and it's definitely impressive. Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell are sublime.

7. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (Howard Hawks, 1953) -- An effortlessly subversive, fluid work of musical cinema headlined by Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell, whose performances pretty much match that of director Hawks. Again, he's one of the filmmakers whose movies I'm going to pursue more and more throughout 2013.

8. Bonnie and Clyde (Arthur Penn, 1968) -- Pauline Kael said it all. One of the landmarks of American movies.

9. Grand Illusion -- A masterclass of acting and staging, beautifully executed by Jean Renoir and one of the strongest ensembles I can recall. Emotionally and spiritually profound, too.

10. Show Me Love -- There are probably a few films I could have picked for the #10 spot, but debut films as brilliant as Lukas Moodysson's deserve all the positive notices they can get. Emotionally rich and humorous tale of young love, not so far away from the masterpiece that was Celine Sciamma's Water Lilies.

Bottom 10 (alphabetical order):
Blood Juice, Clawed: The Legend of Sasquatch, The Devil Inside, Ernest Scared Stupid, Flesh Eater, Flesh for the Beast, I Know How Many Runs You Scored Last Summer, 101 Reykjavik, Small Town Folk, Swimfan.

Side Note: 2012 was also the year I learned that everyone should read the Andrew Sarris book "The American Cinema." The best book about film that I've encountered so far.
