Spring Breakers

Post by Stewball »

Whoa, what have we got here! A surreal Beach Blanket Bingo on steroids, but it keeps its aim on a higher target. Amazing. Once you figure out it isn't using the cliches, you still won't know where its going, and that's from the get-go before they even leave for the beach. Franco shows that he can indeed act. I think it even made a point, but I'm not sure yet. Good luck trying to classify this one.

Some of the camera work at the beginning of the film (pre-Spring Break) was used so effectively that I've rarely felt so uncomfortable in a theater in my life. All of the scenes with the girls calling their parents/grandparents and talking about their experiences without even a trace of the irony of it were comedic gold.

What's brilliant about this movie from a commercial standpoint is that it will attract people for its superficial qualities (aka, those who are seeing it to re-live or gear up for their own wild spring breaks) and those who are more keen to Korine's message about the utter tragedy of the lives these people lead. As somebody who participates in that type of culture to a certain extent, I won't pretend that I didn't enjoy the superficial qualities of the film. But, I also completely connected with the criticisms of it as well. The fact that I was able to both enjoy that and step outside and see the stupidity of it all at the same time made it a pretty interesting and effective work for me.

By superficial qualities of the film that you enjoyed, I assume you mean tits and ass. That was about all I was expecting, which were supplied in dump truck loads, but like you say, that was just its commercial draw. However, it's only grossed $10 mil, so maybe marketing wasn't it's strong suit, being further depressed by it's R rating. On the other hand, it only cost $5 mill to make. 8-)

T and A, sure, but not just that. I mean that on some level, it seems like a stereotypical escapist movie. Good looking people, party music, beaches, guns, money, etc. A movie sort of like what I imagine 21 and Over was. But that was only the very surface level (and how it was marketed). Also, I'm surprised to hear it's only grossed $10 million. I saw it a few weeks after release in a crowded theater on a weekday. And I've heard a lot of people talking about it here and there. Then again, I did see it in downtown LA, which is always packed. And I spend a lot of time in artsy and hipster parts of LA, where Korine occupies some sort of holy status.

Seen it twice in theaters, going again next week.

I love Korine's integration of some narrative in his typical style of film making. It makes for such a much more engaging experience than, say, Gummo. I did really enjoy Trash Humpers, though.

Korine is definitely an impressive auteur, and I will have to see more of his films to make a definitive judgement about him overall.

I was also pleasantly surprised with Skrillex's score for the film. He had some help from Cliff Martinez, and the music just came out wonderfully done.

This has got to be the most misunderstood movie of the decade so far. The people who watched it hated it because it was too weird and not like the trailers and the people who would've liked it prejudged it because they misinterpreted the trailers.

That's too bad, I thought this movie was great. Best of the year so far.

Well, I'd put it in a tie with The Tree of Life, Detachment, The Details, and maybe Trance.

Yeah, but those who went for the T&A got an eyeful, so they shouldn't whine. I guess the T&A/action bunch doesn't like it when [spoiler]a couple of bitches, subbin' for Crockett and Tubbs, take out the cartel without a scratch.8-)

They look like they had way too much fun making that movie.

I wholeheartedly agree with this being one of the most misunderstood movies of the year. Just the other day I was defending to one of the people I work with because they thought it was " stupid soft-core porn with former Disney kids"
when it has a whole story and meaning underlying it. its a movie I loved watching and not just for the T & A.

You do realize it was the same tits and ass all the time? Changing the colors to neon and black and white and using different camera angles doesn't make it different titties. It was the same footage over and over. God, I hated this movie.
