Eli Wallach (1915-2014)

Post by ewp805 »

Just learned that screen legend Eli Wallach passed away three days ago at the age of 98.

Yet another film icon passes on, and he'll be forever remembered as Tuco "The Ugly" and his many other fantastic characters he brought to life. His list of film credits is huge, and I particularly enjoyed getting to see him in a few small roles in more recent films like Ghost Writer.

Rest in peace.

Yeah, was saddened to learn of this yesterday. For a long time, I was heartened by thinking that Wallach and Ernest Borgnine (1917-2012) were two legendary old-school actors who were still alive. Eli Wallach lived a long, memorable life, and was obviously terrific in the Leone Westerns.

I've apparently seen him in 5 films out of the 75 in the Criticker database, so I will definitely be checking out more of his work in the near future.

I've only seen 3 films with him in it: The Godfather Part III, The Lineup, and apparently he was in Mystic River). He was quite good in The Lineup. His performance in it reminded me a lot of Joe Pesci in Scorsese films (but obviously like decades earlier). He's easily the best part of the film, and the film itself is pretty good. I'll have try and see some of those Westerns he is known for.

Rewatched the Magnificent Seven this weekend and drank a toast to Calvera, possibly the dumbest (but most lovable) bandito in Mexico. RIP Mr Wallach.
