Sarah Michelle Gellar isn't really anything... honestly, who cares? having loved the series for a long time now, and having revisited it multiple times, SMG is a weak link in a sort, but, frankly, she plays the part rather effectively (as a whole). the series is exceedingly weak in its earliest seasons, and, in a nice twist, the strength of the later seasons practically depend on the character histories established earlier on. but, if one comes in with an open mind and a deal of patience, one, i believe, will be greatly rewarded. because, buffy is a very fun, very funny, very smart, and very engaging story, with big ideas and big characters.

if i remember correctly, you're the one shitting bricks over dr. horrible? dude, it's the same fucking thing. joss whedon has a fairly distinct style, especially in his dialogue & characterization, and, honestly, if you love dr. horrible as much as you seem to, you'll love buffy too. and if you're thinking, wait wait... but buffy never sings, etc. etc. sixth season, ONCE MORE WITH FEELING, the whole buffy cast is thrown into a supernatural musical. trust me, if you push through those first few seasons (the first is fairly short too), you would be in store for a really really great time.

i would give it another chance, dude.

Rufflesack wrote:Also, saying Friends is the worst thing to be on television ever doesn't really make much sense. What about all those crappy teen sitcoms on the Disney Channel? Friends might be annoying, cliched, silly, whatever, but it's certainly better than, say, Chuck Norris Karate Kommandos.

of course there are worse shows on tv, i was just being hyperbolic... but, my mom likes friends.

p.s. i'll be there for you.

oh, definitely. season seven is probably my favorite though. Angel season five... holy shit. ahhah.

The weird thing is that I'm such a huge Joss Whedon fan, and that I know that every Joss Whedon fan likes everything he's made. I've had second thoughts about Buffy (I have always known about the musical episode, but I have a weird thing about shows where I have to watch them from the beginning, so it's hard to go through 6 seasons for one good episode).

Anyway, I've seen episodes of it from later seasons when I was younger that I actually did like, and that were entirely different from the first ones I saw. I gave up on it a bit too soon, I guess. I'll probably try to watch it again later, as I know perfectly well how some shows that turn out to be awesome can suck in the beginning.

I do like Friends, but I'm pretty sure it's 90% nostalgia and 10% Matthew Perry. Watched reruns of the show virtually every day on TV growing up, so it's kinda hard for me not to like it now.

Well, X-mas, I'll bet you're no longer around, but for feces and laughter I'll say that I was hoping every post in this thread had mentioned AD, along with It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, all that Williams St/PFFR shit (particularly ATHF, Delocated, Xavier: Renegade Angel, Children's Hospital, Check it Out)
A few years back - Wonder Showzen, Mighty Boosh, Strangers With Candy (show, not flick)
I really really miss that early '90's grand spectacle Get a Life, especially any appearances from the god-like (real-life!) dad.

Best recent/current shows on TV are British comedies and American dramas. I recommend all of the following.

Britcom: Ideal, The IT Crowd, Mighty Boosh, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, Spaced, League of Gentlemen, Little Britain

American drama: The Wire, Dexter, Deadwood, Rome, Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Breaking Bad

I just finished watching Dexter Season 5.
Holy crap Julia Stiles is a terrible actress, and she played a horrible character who I hated from the moment we met her. I was waiting for Dexter to smarten up the whole season and just kill her, I was actually pretty pissed when they ended up in the sack together. She added nothing to the series and ate up TONS of screen time with her one note performances. Peter Weller's sleazy PI character was 100 times better, but neither of them can hold a candle to the great John Lithgow from Season 4.
Currently rewatching The Wire from the beginning, I'm up to the start of season 3....
I forgot how awesome Snoop and Chris Partlow were. Snoop is a really tiny girl but was possibly one of the scariest characters on TV at the time.
nah, I loved Firefly and the Serenity movie, but Buffy and Angel were practically unwatchable.

As far as I'm concerned, there is "Mad Men" and then there is everything else.

Seconding The Wire. I watch very little TV drama, but I caught this from the start when it was shown on BBC2 last year. When it finished I bought the box set and watched the whole thing again. It was even better the second time around, simply because there's so much going on in each episode.

For lighter entertainment, I must admit that I do like Doctor Who. It's incredibly silly at times, but it's well written for the most part, and the Doctor is a great character.

Yeah watching The Wire for the second time I'm picking up on all kinds of little details that I missed the first time around. It's a pretty smart show and moves quickly without slowing down to explain things to the audience. I like that.

I'm particularly looking forward to season 4, as it was my least favorite season when I watched it originally, I'm curious to see how I feel about it now.
