Bio: I like movies that romanticize failure and I dislike Internet memes. Both of these are because I am pretentious.
Recent Rankings
60 Leaving Las Vegas (1995) - Jul 06, 2010
Mini-Review: This is one of those movies which is obviously and incontestably well-made, well-written and well-acted but it tries so hard to ruin your day by being weird and sad that it's hard to say you actually like it.
60 Spider-Man 3 (2007) - Jul 06, 2010
Mini-Review: Frankly, this was not nearly as bad as everyone said. It's kind of annoying the way the story jumps around and the CGI is somehow worse than it was in the previous film but there's a good story here and it's full of people being dicks in ways that make sense, people giving into temptations to be at their worst and that's meaningful. It chews subtly on big issues with the super-things as metaphor conceit of the superhero genre. Give it a chance.
80 Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) - Jul 06, 2010
Mini-Review: It's zippy, concise and feels like the product of extremely smart self-editing on the part of the writers and everyone else.
40 Toy Story 3 (2010) - Jul 06, 2010
Mini-Review: I feel like I'm the only person who didn't like Toy Story 3. Yes, I was crying during the ending but that was an ending that built off the first two movies and not this one. Most of this movie is philosophically depressing, a toy-styled, adventure-themed memento mori about a bunch of toys who do not wish to accept the ends of their lives. There was also a lot of cheesy filler like the opening and the Ken stuff. More importantly, the villain wasn't credibly threat or even clearly bad til the end.
20 The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea (2000) - May 03, 2010
Mini-Review: The only character to ever demonstrate any discernible intelligence is the villain which makes her the most relatable character in Mind-Bogglingly Stupid Protagonists: The Movie. Of course, she goes completely bonkers for the climax, leaving us with no characters left to care about. Additionally, this has some of the worst writing I've ever heard.
60 Deadgirl (2008) - May 03, 2010
40 Monsters vs. Aliens (2009) - Mar 01, 2010
Mini-Review: There's a tragic amount of potential to see squandered in a movie like this.
20 Flushed Away (2006) - Mar 01, 2010
Mini-Review: Despite a few moments of good humor, this is mostly a graveyard of derivative jokes and pop culture references which are used as comedy's substitute.
60 Yes Man (2008) - Mar 01, 2010
Mini-Review: Carrey's recent agedness works for this movie and the unrelenting positivity is refreshing.
80 The Frighteners (1996) - Feb 25, 2010
Mini-Review: This feels like a Paul Veerhoeven film. I want to compare it to Robocop. It was pretty much as good as Robocop and if you liked that, you'll probably like this. They have the same tone.
