Mini-Review: It's not as funny as they wanted it to be, but it's still amusing. The gore is the star here, though. All in all, it's so low budget and intentionally bad taste, it's actually pretty good.
Mini-Review: Aronofsky's interest in psychology and strangely defective minds first took film form with Pi. For a first outing into such a domain, this was a pretty tremendous effort. Not to mention visually spectacular.
Mini-Review: This film is so full of stereotypes and cliches I wouldn't even know where to begin; you've seen those characters and most of those scenes in, oh, so many other (sports) movies. However it still somehow manages to work alright, mostly because of a few well written pieces of dialogue and some good acting performances. I've heard some athletes, particularly from team sports, relate to many of the elements portrayed in this movie... so I guess some of those cliches might actually be real.
Mini-Review: A good, well written and well acted crime story. The only thing in the movie that didn't really do it for me was the very end. Other than that it's a very good film.
Mini-Review: So this is Steven Seagal's best movie... which doesn't make it a good film, just a pretty average one. That doesn't mean it's not fun; there's entertainment to be found here if you don't take it too seriously. And yes, some of the scenes are silly, some of the acting is cringe-worthy and the plot is just a rehash so many action flicks you've seen before. Enjoy!
Mini-Review: One of the few movies where some blatant plot-holes do not seem to adversely affect its quality. Also some of the CGI wasn't that great, but all in all it's definitely a better film than I expected it to be. It's also probably the most emotionally heavy movie in the whole franchise. I'm looking forward to a sequel, 'cause the set-up was pretty good.
Mini-Review: The big problem here is that despite having a number of good actors in the cast (even McConaughey is OK in this one), this doesn't really make up for the silly and predictable plot. It's unfortunate, 'cause the idea behind it is pretty cool. In the end I did enjoy it more than the score would indicate, it's fun to watch for the most part. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Mini-Review: Christian Bale does a terrific role and seeing this you have to admire his dedication to his work. The cinematography is also pretty spectacular at times. But what this movie does best is blur the line between reality and dream (or dementia) and, if you don't look for the small hints the movie gives you, you'll have a hard time separating what's real from what's merely a delusion for much of the duration. The downside is that once you realize what's going on, the ending is pretty predictable.
Mini-Review: I caught this thing on TV by accident... it's a laughable, loose adaptation of the Jules Verne novel. The only thing it has in common with the book is the basic plot (people getting stranded on an island) and some of the characters. That's it. If you like bad movies featuring giant animals and monsters, treasure and a total ignorance of the book it's based on then this is a movie for you. If not... you'd be best advised to simply ignore it and perhaps read the original book.
Mini-Review: Some great acting in this movie and a really genuine portrayal of early 80s England. Too bad that despite some pretty intense scenes, the movie ultimately left me a bit underwhelmed; the story took a couple of bad turns and it felt incomplete. Because of this it didn't end up being quite as good as it could've been.
