Mini-Review: There is nothing in this movie to warrant a serious recommendation, although one could say that it at least tries to entertain; it is several tiers above many hollow, lethargic epics that ignore the fact that film is simply projected images and that attempts at realism are absurd.
Mini-Review: Surprisingly unorthodox in concept and presentation; there is a real flavor of originality here. Once the story begins it proceeds naturally, without artificial templates of characterization. In all honesty it is remarkable a movie like this got released.
Mini-Review: That many of its scenes force us into uncomfortable laughter is beside the point; it is an absolutely disgusting film with no heart and no soul, a pristine representation of what comedy has become: a synthetic walking stick for cynical people.
Mini-Review: It has a certain charm, and puts other comedies to shame with its obstinate refusal to produce any characters we would call normal human beings; yet it has too many exhausting, "fast food" comedy touches.
Mini-Review: Often praised for having "one of the best screenplays ever written," it is actually in love with its own cleverness. The title of the film properly defines what we are in for, as there is not much to appreciate aside from an entrancing sense of style. In the beginning, it is brilliant. With time, it becomes irritating.
Mini-Review: The characters are not presented with much depth or discernible sense of purpose, but the animated sequences are so powerful that the film deserves respect on that merit alone. It is often derided for its mystical philosophy, a cheap shot at an obviously non-conventional work. A classic.
Mini-Review: On an intellectual level, the encouragement of plausibility in this paleontologist's nightmare on the part of the filmmakers is a mark of insanity; experience of this kind of primordial horror is continually and frustratingly downplayed by the summer blockbuster genre to which the film belongs.
Mini-Review: Although superior in every respect to its stale-bread, puffed up sequels, the film was clearly never intended to endure and as a result many of its sequences have dated (due to imitation and the increase in sensational filmmaking). It has clean storytelling despite the metaphysical concepts; though its aesthetics are sometimes delicious and sometimes embarrassing.
