Mini-Review: Brilliant animation; a combination of anime style, with a strong Celtic influence. The characters and plot are steeped in metaphor, combining elements of medieval Christianity and pre-Christian Celtic myth. Beautifully done.
Mini-Review: An excellent adaptation of H.G. Well's "Island of Dr. Moreau", although at just over an hour long, the plot feels a bit rushed at times. Still, this is extremely atmospheric and, at times, downright chilling. Charles Laughton, in particular, does an incredibly creepy job of portraying the sadistic and power-hungry Dr. Moreau.
Mini-Review: An amazing film, both simple in its delivery and complex in its message. Performances are splendid all around, especially Gregory Peck's as Atticus Finch, the film's protagonist.
Mini-Review: It's scary (and sad) to think that the subject matter of a film that was made over 50 years ago, about an event that took place over 85 years ago, should still arouse debate, controversy and anger. A bit simplistic in its portrayal of the American South (although I wasn't there in 1925, so I could be wrong). Spencer Tracy gives an amazing performance, and Gene Kelly is delightful as a sort of comedic devil's advocate.
Mini-Review: The Harry Potter of Greek mythology. Entertaining, but a bit juvenile; I would probably have loved this film as a child. Some interesting concepts, but the plotline felt a bit like we were following an adventure video game.
Mini-Review: This film made me do two things that a film hasn't made me do in a while: cry, and, for a moment, believe that romantic love can be real. Excellent performances, beautifully filmed, moving.
Mini-Review: Based on a book I have never read, but have heard much about. Although it proposes that the boys have "regressed" to a primitive state, I really see little difference between the "society" that the boys create and our modern "civilization". The strength in this film lies in the boys' performances; very strong, and without which the material would fall flat.
