64 Safety Last! (1923) - Oct 04, 2011
Mini-Review: Harold Lloyd rightly deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Buster Keaton & Charlie Chaplin, his charm in being the all-American boy-next-door is a very appealing one. 'Safety Last!' has some gob-smacking stunts & real warmth throughout, a pleasure to watch.
71 Nosferatu (1922) - Oct 04, 2011
Mini-Review: The experience of watching Count Orlok creep & haunt the screen is a breath-taking one, it is a perfect performance complimented by the most wonderful make-up effects & deft treatment from the director who unleashes him upon his audience in a very controlled fashion to great effect.
56 Cops (1922) - Oct 04, 2011
Mini-Review: A little too maniacal for my tastes but still worthy of a watch on YouTube - I've never regretted discovering a Buster Keaton flick & this one was no different.
72 The Kid (1921) - Oct 04, 2011
Mini-Review: 'The Kid' is sometimes considered too melodramatic, Chaplin accused of being too focused on reeling the audience in rather than making them laugh - but I for one think this is a great picture & it succeeds in doing everything it wanted. At least in my case, & I'm afraid if you didn't tear up, laugh or gasp when Chaplin wanted you to then you're most probably a cyborg from the future.
62 The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) - Oct 04, 2011
Mini-Review: I love the design of the stage, the German expressionist stuff - & believe it worked fantastically in regards to the story... but I can't say I was riveted by the picture on the whole. However, a very striking film which deserved to be remembered for what it achieved & which films it influenced.
67 One Week (1920) - Oct 04, 2011
Mini-Review: Buster Keaton movies always make me smile, they charm the hell out of me without fail. This one has all his good stuff - the romantic plot, the pratfalls, the dangerous & inventive stunts, hitting a cop (played by Charlie Chaplin) over the head with his own truncheon... what more could you want from a Keaton?
58 Barbe-bleue (1901) - Sep 07, 2010
Mini-Review: A totally surprising & different style of film than I was expecting from Méliès, it's a horror story! A pretty weak first half drags the film down but the last couple of minutes are brilliant & I love how he peppers the film with all his different camera-tricks, utilising them to their fullest to tell the tale in an interesting way.
52 L' Arrivée d'un train à La Ciotat (1895) - Jul 30, 2010
Mini-Review: The story of the first crowds who watched it ducking and scrambling to get out of the way of the train is certainly funny, another historic short from the Lumière brothers.
52 L' Arroseur arrosé (1895) - Jul 30, 2010
Mini-Review: It's certainly the funniest Lumière short I've seen so far, nice to see them try something entertaining.
50 Repas de bébé (1895) - Jul 30, 2010
Mini-Review: Hard to write a review about such a short, seemingly meaningless clip but obviously the historical importance is high. Rated it dead centre just to show I've seen it.
