Mini-Review: Jean-Louis Barrault plays the mime in this movie, and see it for his incredible performance alone!!! This movie was made during the Nazi occupation of Paris, and Barrault (in addition to starring in it) was risking his life, hiding Jews as extras in the film, and using the set food for them. At the other end of the spectrum, Arletty, who plays the beautiful Garance, was in real life consorting with a Nazi. But just see the movie for the film itself - a reverie, a dream of a film.
Mini-Review: A magnificent film. The photography is haunting, magical. Performances, especially by La Bete (the beast) are first rate. The only reason it gets a 95 and not 100, is the last 60 seconds of the film. Ahh, Beast!
Mini-Review: Excellent Performance by Hugh Laurie. Not so much by Jolie Richardson. First time I'd ever seen Tom Hollander, (as Ewan Proclaimer, great character name) and he is now a must-see actor for me. Laurie makes the most of his scenes, and does a killer piano composition, but the movie doesn't seem to flow, it's a series of vignettes, some better than others.
Mini-Review: If not for Hugh Laurie, I would not have watched past the first 10 minutes. Terrible directing. Wast of a good cast. Director in the Extras section is a total a**.
