96 The Ice Storm (1997) - Apr 20, 2008
Mini-Review: Easily the most intense Swinging party ever put to film. In all seriousness, it's an incredible scene in an incredible picture; everything is pitch-perfect and it's one of the best family dramas post-Bergman. The atmosphere is wonderful, with a cold, mysterious tone that really sets it apart. The actual ice storm reminded me how beautiful nature can be.
71 Night Watch (2004) - Apr 12, 2008
Mini-Review: I can appreciate the "Fuck what it looks like, lets have more CG than Toy Story" mentality, because while it does look bad a lot of the time, it's still a lot of fun to watch with some suspension of belief. The plot is terrible and confusing, but who cares; it's not any worse than the Matrix.
58 The Last Castle (2001) - Apr 12, 2008
Mini-Review: Does not appeal to my "Hate the Troops" liberal ideals.
60 Reno 911!: Miami (2007) - Apr 12, 2008
70 Half Nelson (2006) - Apr 12, 2008
Mini-Review: I understand the director's intention to shoot this like it's the fucking Bourne Ultimatum, but it's an incredibly insipid gimmick that drags down an otherwise okay movie. Gosling is really, really good, but when it comes down to it, "Troubled, drug-addled affluent white writer" is a lot less interesting than Shareeka Epps' wonderful portrayal as a much more troubled student.
85 Memento (2001) - Apr 12, 2008
Mini-Review: Wonderful direction, and a strong performance by Pearce. Could have been just another gimmicky revenge/thriller, but the ambiguity of what happened to his wife added such a wonderful layer to the whole mystery.
70 3 Extremes (2004) - Mar 20, 2008
Mini-Review: Probably the last entertaining Asian Horror films I've seen before the genre was completely over-saturated. Dumplings is by far the strongest, but the other two have their merits- they're both kind of confusing and pointless, yet they both look amazing.
96 In the Mood for Love (2000) - Mar 20, 2008
30 Meet the Fockers (2004) - Mar 07, 2008
Mini-Review: The addition of Stiller's parents was a good idea in theory, and the casting was perfect, but it's just too wacky and odd, when the original was at least somewhat grounded in reality.
