40 Shrek the Third (2007) - May 29, 2012
Mini-Review: Shrek the Third has convinced me that the Shrek series no longer needs further installments. The charm is gone, or maybe the missing element was just the good writing. This is a frequently boring, formulaic film that bring forth the occasional laugh and always looks good. The team creating this film didn't get lazy, but the writers might have. Even fans of the first two films might not find all that much to like here.
80 Shrek 2 (2004) - May 28, 2012
Mini-Review: Shrek 2 is a great sequel to a very good film. It improves on one simple thing from the original, the consistency to its tone, and that makes a world of difference. Everything works slightly better than it did in the first film, and instead of a tonal shift, all of the elements blend together to create a wonderful experience. That is done without sacrificing a simple and straightforward narrative. Shrek was taken and made better. This is a sequel done right.
70 Shrek (2001) - May 27, 2012
Mini-Review: Shrek is an enjoyable animated film for everyone. It is smart, funny, and while it will obviously appeal to children, it doesn't dumb down its content to make it inaccessible to adults. The animation is beautiful, and the world that's created is something that you want to spend a lot of time within. While it does begin to unravel near its conclusion as we stop getting action and move more into dramatic territory, this is still a very fun film that anyone can enjoy.
60 Sahara (2005) - May 26, 2012
Mini-Review: Sahara works almost solely because of its pacing. Some creativity here and there helps, but if the film let us think about its absurd plot, we might not enjoy it. But it kept the pressure on, rarely letting up, and I found myself having quite the fun time. It doesn't have great characters, villains, or anything you could put into a successful drama picture, but that's okay because the action scenes are enjoyable enough to keep you entertained. Preposterous? Sure.
40 Crash (1996) - May 25, 2012
Mini-Review: Crash is interesting only because of its subject matter. After you get past that, there's little to keep you engaged and I ended up becoming bored thanks to the lack of a real story and the poorly developed characters. There needs to be something to keep the audience watching your film, and Crash didn't have anything. It might be a controversial film thanks to the sex scenes, and the car crashes feel more real than many other films, but Crash isn't worth your time.
65 The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000) - May 24, 2012
Mini-Review: The Legend of Bagger Vance has a man attempting to find himself all while playing what many characters call the "Greatest game ever made." The golf tournament doesn't matter, but our main character does. After spending two hours with him, I hoped that everything he ever wanted would come true, and had many held-breath moments over the course of the film. It does have a couple of annoying characters and Will Smith's character never quite worked, but on the whole, I quite enjoyed this film.
40 Powder Blue (2009) - May 23, 2012
Mini-Review: Powder Blue is ultimately not worth your time, even if I liked most of the actors in it. There's too much going on to tie up by the end, with a lot of important points being forgotten about at the mid-way point. Characters are difficult to understand as well, leading to more than one point in the film where you'll wonder why exactly they act the way they did. I also wasn't sure of what Powder Blue wanted to tell me, which is also part of the problem of using such a crowded and messy screenplay.
60 Wedding Crashers (2005) - May 22, 2012
Mini-Review: Wedding Crashers is a good, not great comedy with a real heart and enough enjoyable moments to make it worth watching. It's not great because it's far too long, contains a bunch of unnecessary and pointless scenes, and is as clichéd as your average romantic comedy. But it has interesting characters and has enough going on to distract you from those detractors for long enough to have a good time. It's also kind of funny, especially if you're a fan of either of the two lead actors.
70 The Beaver (2011) - May 21, 2012
Mini-Review: I know that a lot of people will be put off not only because this is a drama starring Mel Gibson, but also because it features Mel Gibson and a sentient puppet. These kinds of things sometimes can't be overcome now matter how open minded you want to be. But if both of these things aren't too much of a turn-off, I definitely have to give it a recommendation. I went in expecting a film so bad that it would be a riot, and I ended up with a touching drama about a man in a terrible state of mind.
20 Red Riding Hood (2011) - May 20, 2012
Mini-Review: Red Riding Hood is awful. It's not scary, I didn't care about anyone, the romance failed, there was no atmosphere, it didn't know what it wanted to do in each scene, and two little kids killed a bunny! (And more importantly, I fixated on that because thinking about the motivation behind it -- which, by the way, makes no sense later on -- was more interesting than anything else in the film.) I don't think you can get more horrific than that.
