95 127 Hours (2010) - Dec 07, 2010
87 The Game (1997) - Aug 21, 2010
89 Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) - Aug 20, 2010
Mini-Review: So unique, so quirky, so funny, so awesome. A charming film that seamlessly pulls you into it's own style as it pioneers a new aesthetic of film-making. It also captures the young generation in a way no other film has. I think this is destined to be a classic; dare I say our Ferris Bueller's Day Off??
86 Inception (2010) - Aug 20, 2010
Mini-Review: I have really split feelings on this movie. On one hand it is incredibly engaging to watch and at the end of the movie my heart was literally thumping, on the other hand it is an irrelevant movie because it is about nothing. It is merely a puzzle, and an unsolvable on at that. It is not art, and it gives few members of it's wonderful cast any chance to act (really only Dicaprio and the wonderful Cillian Murphy). I just wish there was something one could take away from this movie.
82 Dreamscape (1984) - Aug 11, 2010
Mini-Review: looking for the 80's prequel to Inception? Then look no further. Dated in a way some will find charming, others cheesy. And terrible special effects, even for its day I imagine. Dennis Quaid reminds me of a young Harrison Ford here, and Christopher Plummer makes an enjoyable, if cliche villain.
79 Fear (1996) - Aug 10, 2010
Mini-Review: it's got a lot of terrible ratings on here, but I'm a sucker for thrillers and this one isn't all that bad, is it? It's a cliche genre movie and it doesn't have nearly enough balls for my taste (its all in the story, the execution could have been grittier) but it has pretty good performances and I'm a fan of the genre. The whole finale is a worse version of the Straw Dogs ending, but if you're going to copy, copy from the best. I just wish this movie had the balls of straw dogs or cape fear.
84 Airplane! (1980) - Aug 10, 2010
Mini-Review: pretty funny movie, but the style of humor does get repetitive by the end. Some very clever stuff, a few laugh out loud moments and lots of originality, I can see why it's a classic.
91 The Kids Are All Right (2010) - Aug 08, 2010
Mini-Review: There are a few minor sour notes in this movie that I don't have the space to go into, but that involved not understanding character motivation, but this movie is simply amazing in that few films can make you feel so hard for so many different characters at the same time. Then those characters go into conflict with each other and you feel awkward for them (a huge accomplishment in any piece of performance I think). Terrific acting all around, especially by the moms. see it.
83 Despicable Me (2010) - Aug 05, 2010
Mini-Review: Pretty funny movie with a odd and not terribly attractive title. A surprising message about the conflict between doing what you always imagined you wanted to do in life in the face of children and the meaning they give to a parent's life. ego versus selflessness.
87 The Descent (2005) - Jul 28, 2010
Mini-Review: badass, original horror movie. Great feeling of mounting tension and claustrophobia in the first half or so and a second half that just unleashes a thrill ride of pure glee for horror fans. thumbs up
