Mini-Review: A lot of things about this are off. The music is heavy-handed and creepy. Lancaster is not vulnerable enough for the role. The direction is dated. The dialogue is writerly. Yet, there is still something about this enigmatic journey that is worth watching --- once.
Mini-Review: If you've never seen The Philadelphia Story (the original non-musical film) then please, see that first. Or better yet, see it instead. You just might hate this in comparison. None of the actors in High Society are on the level of Katherine Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart, and Cary Grant. The direction is sadly, to set the camera in one place and let everything wander into frame (and not in an artsy way). Some of the songs are good, though. Louis Armstrong is a treat.
Mini-Review: Awful. Mawkish Treacle. And, I say this as someone who thinks Four Weddings and a Funeral (also written by Richard Curtis) is the best RomCom of 90's. Emma Thompson is the only reason to watch this, and even she can't save it. It's the film equivalent of a "Hang in There" kitty calendar.
Mini-Review: I don't know what to do with this. I like the story a lot. It's a 10. But, I hate all the songs. I'm convinced "Good Mornin'" is playing on a continuous loop in Hell. I know it's a sacrilege amongst film buffs to dislike this one, but I can't score this any higher.
