Mini-Review: if these soldiers were elite, they did a good job at disguising that. you could basically have a hundred twenty year old men doing voiceover work for a hundred identical lego men and no one would know the difference. super confusing when they address one another. it set the standard for future films in the genre but wound up being one of the better ones out there which unfortunately does not exactly make it great.
Mini-Review: i tried very hard to like it, i really did. i enjoyed edgar wright's previous works especially those with pegg/frost, but this was too awkward, pseudo-quirky, try-too-hard, smarter-than-thou for its own good. also pretty boring premise. kinda shocking since it features many actors whose work i enjoy. (schwartzman, cera, mae whitman in AD) however since i am reviewing the dvd version i must say the bonus features were great. other than that...... totally meh.
Mini-Review: in short: loved it. so gritty. bigelow makes sure she knows her shit before she films it. although most of us aren't all that familiar with war we must know it not to be all gun-whipping and body-counting. this film only serves as an affirmation to what we've suspected. it manages to be absolutely realistic about war, telling us that it isn't all about the action, but not letting us leave it out either. cuts to the chase, in-your-face realities of war. also, jeremy renner: perfect.
Mini-Review: 9 points for emile hirsch. 1 point for max minghella. everything else has no point.
Mini-Review: i generally dislike films about journalists because they mostly harp on how they're so snoopy and destructive to their subjects, i.e. being a complete pain in the ass. this one was not really an exception, the jew/ww2 storyline not being especially groundbreaking either, but i can see the effort. also, good pacing and cross-cutting of eras without losing touch with the main story. liked how it flowed and that it actually worked. props to kristin scott thomas for effortless language transcending.
Mini-Review: first part glaringly draggy, but i must admit by the time they found the jaguar shark i was a little teary-eyed. superb soundtracking that has come to be expected in wes anderson's films, especially the acoustic translations of bob dylan, and definitely the appropriately timed sigur ros song did contribute to the emotional factor that murray's character was supposed to be a contrast to. plot may have been excessively quirky as WA films are sometimes victims of.
Mini-Review: was completely baffled by the first part and guy ritchie probably knew this was bound to happen so he made sherlock downey jr explain everything he was doing. not the best way to convey a story. flat attempt at portraying mr holmes as an unrepentant & excessive bachelor, but i know what he meant. a good performance by RDJ that was quite wasted. jude law was above average, fairly appropriate for that role. pretty much tailor made/scripted for him. noomi rapace & stephen fry typically great here.
