Mini-Review: I don't mind the cynicism. I'm a bit of a cynic myself. The film just does not hold much weight or gravity. A pleasant watch but nothing more.
Mini-Review: Fukunaga proves he is a talent to watch out for with this exquisitely crafted period romance and its sublimely Gothic atmospherics. Wasikowska and Fassbender impress with their assured performances and the cinematography is visually arresting. Simply the best Jane Eyre adaptation.
Mini-Review: My problem with the source material and the moody and highly entertaining original Swedish film is their obvious, almost crude take on misogynistic themes. Thankfully, Fincher has circumvented this issue by modulating the more overt elements of the story to create a leaner, cooler, more stylish, more streamlined, and altogether more compelling film adaptation. Masterfully edited and directed. Plus Rooney Mara is a revelation. Can't wait to see more from her.
Mini-Review: Highly underrated in my opinion. People complain of its extremely detached storytelling but I think that's the point of this terrific rebuke on the objectification of women. The coldly clinical and purposefully opaque approach enhances its oddly compelling deconstruction of sex with Emily Browning's hauntingly icy performance reflecting the character's inner turmoil beneath the surface of calm. One of the year's best films.
Mini-Review: Payne and Clooney elevate what seemed like an overdone premise into a meaningful, heartfelt, and wonderfully balanced comedic drama that never devolves into melodramatic schlock.
Mini-Review: I'm baffled. My PSI for this is 97. I am not one of those who relishes going against a universal consensus, but I simply must do for this soon-to-be Oscar winner. Yes, Dujardin is impressive and undeniably charming but the film itself left me cold and largely unmoved. I even found it quite tedious at times. It seemed to have just glossed over the generalities of the silent film era without really having anything particularly important or interesting to say.
Mini-Review: The most complex, emotionally devastating, and morally challenging film of the year. A precise microcosm of class and culture. Mistakes are made but no one's really at fault. It's just the way things are.
Mini-Review: Chastain is great. The rest not so much.
Mini-Review: Superbly plotted and compellingly paced, Soderbergh skillfully creates a tense and vividly realistic scenario of a pandemic. I have a medical background so it gave me great pleasure that the scientific aspects of the film were, for the most part, accurate and plausible. The paranoia event of the year.
Mini-Review: Initially, I had the impression this is going to be another minor, low-key approach to the oft-told story of infidelity and the dissolution of marriage. Well it is indeed low-key but definitely not minor. We get long continuous shots ripe with tension and perceptive, nonjudgmental observations even amid the most banal of conversations. The revelation scene feels astonishingly real and the ending so achingly human. Highly recommended.
