75 Reach - Feb 19, 2010
Mini-Review: Would be cooler if it was longer or had a less predictable ending. Animation is great though and is an entertaining three minutes.
88 Thirst - Feb 19, 2010
Mini-Review: A long movie that tends to meander in spots, as well as some sub-par special effects in a couple scenes, this is nevertheless another strong showing from Park-Chan Wook showing his take on vampirism. Especially refreshing take after the inundation of "cool" vampire movies, this shows them as the chilling monsters they can be with some exceptionally uncomfortable scenes. This is definitely not his best work but it's a strong one.
85 Fantastic Mr. Fox - Feb 19, 2010
Mini-Review: A pretty good animated film. I feel if I had read the story when I was in my childhood I would've enjoyed it more. The animation is extremely well done and a joy to watch. There was a certain feeling to this movie, either in the character's delivery or the overall direction, that turned me off a fair bit though, and prevented this from being a truly great movie for me. Either way a decent film.
70 The Hurt Locker - Feb 03, 2010
Mini-Review: Features a completely unlikable, unrealistic, dumb-as-shit main character that only proves by the end of the film, and this is the entire point of the film, how much of a dumb redneck shithead he is. It's not necessarily a bad thing to have an unlikable lead (Clockwork Orange) but none of the other characters are developed beyond a single character trait. The rest is a bunch of loosely tied together "tense" scenes with no real pace or point, coupled with lazy shaky cam bullshit.
80 Sherlock Holmes - Jan 24, 2010
Mini-Review: Guy Ritchie delivers a another solid action flick with an ever-awesome Downey Jr as the lead. Seeing as how I don't know anything about Holmes canon I can't comment on any authenticity (though it's obviously modernized) and as an update it works for me. A fun action flick, not much more, with a promise of a sequel I'll probably want to see as well.
61 Extract - Jan 23, 2010
Mini-Review: What happened to Mike Judge and why is this ranked so high on my PSIs. Meandering plot with characters I could care less about, each one a stereotype of some sort with no development. Just watching pointless people do pointless things and make dumb decisions that lead exactly where you think they're going to lead. I was hoping for so much after Idiocracy but this was terrible.
87 In the Loop - Jan 23, 2010
Mini-Review: Hilarious comedy and one of the best political satires I've ever seen. The humour tends to be black as coal but some of the dialogue and sequences are hysterical, before devolving into a somewhat sombre affair at points about moral decisions and political ethics. All the actors are spot on, each delivering a different satirical look and each one fantastic in their own right. This is a must see just for Capaldi's character.
87 Up in the Air - Jan 23, 2010
Mini-Review: Not quite the film of the year I was hoping for after hearing the hype and seeing Reitman's and Clooney's names attached to it. This is most definitely a good film even if it tries too hard to deliver an emotional punch with montage after montage of people being fired. The film tends to plod in areas with no real conflict but overall this is a fine movie about living with your choices and what to expect out of life.
97 A Serious Man - Jan 22, 2010
Mini-Review: A stunning film that is even better the second time you watch it. There's so many little touches, so many allusions to the overarching story, so many hints as to their intents and little touches that it really makes this film something special. This is them doing purely what they want to do, as evidenced by the limited release, this is their film, and their prowess shines through. The performances are great and work with the writing and directing to make this a fantastic film.
