83 Out of the Past (1947) - Nov 05, 2009
Mini-Review: Can Hollywood really make a pure film noir? If so, this is one of them. Robert Mitchum shines as the man as composed as he is doomed. Jane Greer is darkly feminine as the girl who never lets you get close enough to hurt her. Kirk Douglas is creepy and cool as the man too rich to play by anyone's rules but his own.
85 His Girl Friday (1940) - Nov 05, 2009
Mini-Review: What George Lucas did for special effects, Howard Hawks did for dialogue in this newspaper drama. A great re-imagining of the taming of the shrew, this comedy shows what can be done with a few sets, a couple telephones, and Cary Grant giving the best performance of the quick-talking newspaper editor character ever put to celluloid. 85%
90 Kontroll (2003) - Nov 05, 2009
Mini-Review: Some films aspire to creating a world of their own, a fully-functioning universe where only the specific laws of the film apply. Kontroll creates such a world without blowing the bank on art direction, props or costumes. Underground, the makers of this film have created a darkly beautiful hades populated by a charmingly misanthropic cast. Aside from creating such a complete world, the pacing of the film is sharp, the cinematography is gorgeous, and the ultimate message of the story comes off
50 Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009) - Nov 05, 2009
Mini-Review: 50% - The action sequences were bang-on, the special effects wowed me, the explosions were 100% - Everything else was a zero. The robots that transformed into drug dealers, the hollow, dead performances from everyone involved, the fact that the MILITARY killed Devastator (guess these guys have never seen a good old Kaiju), every creative choice that didn't involve blowing something up was completely phoned in. Therefore, 100 0/2 = 50% for this blockbuster.
