75 75% Now You See Me 2 Now You See Me 2 (2016) - Rated 13 Jun 2016
"If I ran Hollywood, the FAST & FURIOUS franchise woulda been put to bed years ago and I'd be prepping to shoot NOW YOU SEE ME 3 & 4 back-to-back right about now. The first one drove you crazy with the dumb plot twists but made for great weekend HBO find-something-on-TV-and-leave-it viewing. This one strives for that kind of disposability right off the bat, so it's aces all the way. Also somebody needs to make a 10-hour YouTube video of Lizzy Caplan saying "South African gangstas!""

"No, guys. No. No. This is awesome. This is fucking INSANE and AWESOME. Here are the names of the main characters: Jericho Stewart! Quaker Wells! Bill Pope! At one point Costner's character is imprisoned in the backseat of a car and he has to escape and to accomplish this he eats part of the car door. He EATS PART OF THE CAR DOOR, guys. I want to watch this movie again RIGHT NOW."
57 39% Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2012) - Rated 18 Feb 2012
"Well...damn. The first one was junky fun. This one's just junky. It threw me off from the first scenes, and I was never able to get comfortably back on board--it's just such an oddly arrhythmic, haphazard, everything-but-the-kitchen sink kind of mess. I don't know if Neveldine & Taylor were trying too hard, or were too aggressively hamstrung by the PG-13 rating, or if the unnecessary 3D sucked the life out of it, or what, but it just sorta sits there. Elba's good, though."

"Movie: annoying and kinda smug. Monster design: outstanding."

"It's taking suspension of disbelief to a whole other level when a movie asks you to buy the Rock handily getting his ass kicked by 5'4" Aaron Paul. Also the climax is supposed to be this big cathartic upbeat celebration but all I kept thinking was "Jesus, Rock, at least put on some underpants." You can make it marginally more satisfying by imagining Jason Bateman's character as the same guy he played in THE GIFT. (Though that means Gordo would also have gone to this high school)"
90 94% The Woman The Woman (2011) - Rated 18 Feb 2012
"This is what horror is supposed to look like. Bone-chilling, unsettling, and vaguely dirty; you sort of get the impression that you should be watching this alone, at night, with the shades drawn and the volume turned way down. Searingly brilliant and terrifying, with an ending that redefines the term "bravura." Sean Bridgers turns in an unforgettably, bravely skeevy performance, and the woman...well, she's kind of a metaphor, isn't she?"
70 63% The Innkeepers The Innkeepers (2011) - Rated 29 Jan 2012
"Its budget is visibly pretty low, and it's not exactly the most well-crafted horror flick out there, but this is unabashedly old-school and provides more than its share of kicky ghost story fun. So many horror filmmakers these days neglect to imbue their films with atmosphere and personality, forgetting that these are the elements that make the scares stick. In THE INNKEEPERS, the scares stick. Also, Sara Paxton is really, really cute."
37 21% War Horse War Horse (2011) - Rated 30 Jan 2012
"Dreck. Spielberg should be commended, I suppose, for resisting the urge to make his horses talk and walk on two legs, but they're still ridiculously anthropomorphized, and there isn't a sentimental Golden Hollywood family-friendly war picture cliche that the director doesn't furiously and mawkishly hammer into the ground. Shameless and endless. Rent AU HASARD BALTHAZAR instead, why don'tcha?"
81 84% The Woman in Black The Woman in Black (2012) - Rated 13 Feb 2012
"It'd probably land with a thud upon second viewing, because it relies so much on cheap jolts and boo moments and things leaping outta the dark. But you can't deny the craftsmanship at work here; the crowd I saw this with was ducking and jumping and bobbing and weaving like they were on a roller coaster. It is a haunted house movie without cynicism or pretension--it aims to give you a few really good scares, and that's exactly what it does. No more, no less."
74 73% Finding Dory Finding Dory (2016) - Rated 19 Jun 2016
"Educational. Learned lots of stuff in this one, foremost of which was that if Al Bundy were a sea creature, he'd be a seven-legged octopus. That psychotic seal with the eyebrows that doesn't talk needs to be Disney/Pixar's version of that insufferable Scrat character from the ICE AGE movies. Nobody in my family cried at this, which is getting to be a rarer and rarer thing with frigging Pixar."
