88 The Departed (2006) - May 29, 2012
93 The Lovely Bones (2009) - May 28, 2012
Mini-Review: Somehow I seemed to find something in this film the rest of the world didnt. Honestly, I thought it was both beautiful and harrowing with an impressive cast, and an original storyline and presentation. I can see how some people had problems with the rapid changing in tone, but I thought it struck a perfect balance and I was never distracted from the gut-wrenching tale of human loss. I guess I must be wrong, but I have to stay true to my personal impressions of the film which were very high.
66 A History of Violence (2005) - May 28, 2012
Mini-Review: One of the best and most disturbing opening scenes in memory, however the compete works seems to be a forgettable thriller that feels a tad tired and unoriginal. On the other hand the graphic violence sure packs a punch, and the unlaying message about the way we value violence in society was interesting. I was definitely entertained throughout, just never really gripped or thrilled.
82 Rain Man (1988) - May 27, 2012
Mini-Review: A powerfull and moving drama driven by a strong performance from Cruise and an unforgettable performance from Dustin Hoffman. The film itself was rarely boring and I grew to like and care for both of the characters despite Cruise basically playing an asshole, his character arc is fun to watch and forms the main plot of the movie. My favourite scenes are definately those that take place in the casino, although the rain man revelation is very nicely done too.
71 No Country for Old Men (2007) - May 24, 2012
Mini-Review: The Coen brothers directing talent is evident from the very start of this movie, with so many visually striking scenes full of atmosphere as well as great action scenes. However I had issues with, well the simplicity of everything. The storyline is just the protagonist feeling from the antagonist, and while the villein certainly is interesting he also falls into the slightly too easy 'pure-evil' category. I don't know, I just felt overall it lacked depth, but still a solid action film.
64 Days of Thunder (1990) - May 24, 2012
Mini-Review: Tom Cruise plays yet another cocky and arrogant, but highly skilled hotshot, this time taking on the world of NASCAR. Tony Scott does a good job of directing the race scenes, which are used very liberally to the point of getting slightly monotonous. The film also count possibly follow a more cliche 80's action movie structure including the unnecessary and awful romance. Despite all of this I mostly enjoyed the movie, solid entertainment for when you're not feeling too clever I guess.
83 Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (2005) - May 18, 2012
Mini-Review: Where do I start, engaging storyline, great actors working brilliantly together and a superb script, yes I was indeed very impressed by this movie. Downey Jr and Kilmer work fantastically together, thanks in part to the hilarious and quirky script that caused me to laugh out loud several times while also providing an interesting mystery to keep me hooked. Finally ive always loved movies with a good narration from the protagonist, oh and some good action scenes too!
80 Traffic (2000) - May 18, 2012
Mini-Review: As a film this is outstanding, the cast and the directing are superb, although the very indie production style took a while to grow on me. The interweaving storyline's where a great idea and allowed for the war on drugs to be explored from many different angles, at the same time this does mean some problems arise from an unequal representation, for instance all the kids taking drugs where in my opinion unlikable idiots. Still I was very entertained, so all in all a fine movie.
