Recent Rankings
64 Unleashed (2005) - Nov 17, 2010
Mini-Review: Surprisingly beautiful soundtrack considering the nature of the film. Completely misleading advertising campaign though, when I put the film in I was expecting to watch a balls-to-the-wall Statham-esque action flick. What I instead received was a shit load of character development with only a few punches thrown. It was a pleasant surprise but wasn't mind blowing enough to make this film great. Just decent.
36 Skyline (2010) - Nov 17, 2010
Mini-Review: It's War of the Worlds except everyone is Dakota Fanning.
72 Knocked Up (2007) - Nov 17, 2010
Mini-Review: Apatow has a real gift when it comes to portraying relationships (and life in general) as completely shitty but totally worth the effort. He really needs to punch his daughters in the face though.
65 Despicable Me (2010) - Nov 17, 2010
Mini-Review: A decent enough animated comedy. Not Meatballs quality but still enjoyable. The supporting cast really carried it though which probably says something bad about the writing.
71 Say Anything... (1989) - Oct 09, 2010
Mini-Review: Is Say Anything the Scott Pilgrim of twenty years ago? I actually think it might be.
66 Galaxy Quest (1999) - Oct 09, 2010
Mini-Review: I didn't have particularly high hopes when I saw the DVD cover but this film turned out pretty alright. I mean, I laughed at least once and smiled a handful of times so it was an enjoyable experience. Good enough to watch, basically.
76 Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) - Sep 28, 2010
Mini-Review: Oh James Cameron, why won't you return and give this film the sequel it deserves? (actually I thought Salvation was alright)
84 District 9 (2009) - Sep 28, 2010
Mini-Review: A fantastic original screenplay, the best of 2009. It starts as a kind of fake documentary which really adds to the gritty tone of the film but also knows exactly when to make the jump to conventional narrative telling before the whole fly on the wall stuff gets old.
86 Push (2009) - Sep 28, 2010
Mini-Review: This film is an awesome fusion of gritty cinematography and blockbuster narratives. Unfortunately, it's probably because it was marketed as a blockbuster that it was received so badly. However, the grainy aesthetics and nicely portrayed and developed characters, twinned with the rich mix of supernatural abilities establish this film as both a favourite and an inspiration.
41 The Departed (2006) - Sep 28, 2010
Mini-Review: This is possibly the worst edited blockbuster I've ever seen and I say that with total conviction. Then I find out it got an Oscar for just that? That's seriously hilarious. I mean, what, all you gotta do is cut loudly mixed music in and out whenever you feel like it and you're a fucking artistic genius? Fuck you.
