63 The Driller Killer (1979) - Jul 05, 2008
Mini-Review: Sat through this hoping to see some early signs of the chops that Abel Ferrara showed in King of New York. Nothing doing.
83 Shoot 'Em Up (2007) - Jan 28, 2008
83 Stardust (2007) - Jan 28, 2008
82 3:10 to Yuma (2007) - Jan 28, 2008
Mini-Review: Respectable western that suffers from the backwards casting of the two leads: Bale would have been much more believable as the young, evilly charismatic villain, just as Crowe would have been more credible as the down and out rancher getting no respect from women or children. The plot also left a lot to be desired, especially the ending, as has been noted by others. On the other hand, Peter Fonda's performance is exceptional, and if you need a fix of horses and six-shooters, this will do.
50 Deja Vu (2006) - Jan 01, 2008
Mini-Review: F*&k me? F*&K YOU!!! How dare you (Tony "Never Will Be Ridley" Scott) waste two hours of my life for the most gutless, preposterous, inconsistent, illogical cheap Hollywood ending that I've seen recently. Totally spoils what was an otherwise effective action movie. And can Hollywood now please stay away - FAR away - from time travel movies? They seem to leave audiences at best annoyed, and at worst actively pissed off, which I am with this mess. Skip this and go with Inside Man instead.
40 The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) - Dec 31, 2007
Mini-Review: So much to hate: The director's bizarre addiction to the shaky-cam; the "script" (my favorite: "This is where it started. This is where it's gonna end." Ooooooo); trying to pass off a jowly Matt Damon as an action hero when all I kept seeing in my head was him and Robin Williams crying in each other's arms; the recycling of Brian Cox as the evil genius behind the creation of an enhanced human killing machine (does Bourne have adamantium bones?). Save your $$ and rent any Die Hard instead.
83 National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007) - Dec 29, 2007
Mini-Review: I agree with those who are saying that this movie - especially the climactic scenes - provokes comparisons with the Indiana Jones movies. That's too bad, because Jon Turtletaub is no Steven Spielberg and Nicolas Cage is no Harrison Ford. Still, the movie is a workmanlike sequel to the original, and gets extra points for taking an unabashedly patriotic and unironic view of American history. A legitimately entertaining movie to which you can take all of the kids and not sweat either foul langua
86 A Very Long Engagement (2004) - Dec 22, 2007
Mini-Review: A charming, beautiful and intelligent film, and not at all a "chick flick" as you might be lead to believe by the title and promotional photo. In fact, the film vividly - but not didactically - portrays the horror of World War I trench warfare, and is every bit as much a mystery as it is a love story. Ergo, there is plenty there for menfolk to love, not to mention the beautiful Audrey Tatou. Jeunet's directorial chops remind me of Scorsese. Terrific movie.
83 No Country for Old Men (2007) - Dec 22, 2007
Mini-Review: Just not seeing the "genius", "masterpiece", "year's best" plaudits that others are piling on this movie. It's interesting, certainly worth seeing, and has some snappy dialogue and good performances, but folks seem to be mistaking obtuse plotting and a failed ending for "depth" and "importance".
