Mini-Review: A brilliant idea; and could anyone really have done it better than Richard Curtis?
Mini-Review: A brilliant idea for a story, which starts out very promising. It's clear that the director intended to portray a story so dark and non-fairytale that audiences were moved to be uncomfortable. Oddly enough, I did feel uncomfortable, but for different reasons. The events which unfolded; and the characters therein; seemed oddly un-human, which left me feeling no connection to the characters at all. As such, the film's potential power was lost on me.
Mini-Review: Despite having a terrific premise - and a chillingly brilliant performance from Christian Bale - I felt the film essentially did nothing but establish a series of loose ends which it never tied up. As a character piece; and as an example of how queasy violence SHOULD be portrayed in film; this is a must-see. It's just a shame that the pay-out (or lack thereof) gave no hint of closure, which made the whole experience oddly unsatisfying when the credits rolled.
