Mini-Review: *sigh* I suspect that the version of Ponyo that I saw tonight was grossly mutilated to conform to a Disney formula. I am eager to seek out a Japanese version. I suspect that the character of Ponyo's mother has a scene where she is "scary", as Ponyo describes her in the beginning, but it was cut. As the character appears in the American version, she is nauseatingly ethereal and glamorous. This film was cut down at least 20 minutes from where it should have been to be successful.
Mini-Review: This film is surreal stop motion animation in a similar vein to the films of Svankmajer. The characters are chimeric, weird, and fantastical. There are scenes involving a spider that I found especially captivating. Drawbacks include crude stop motion and some scenes are a bit too long and repetitive. The creepiness did not turn off my 3-y.o. In fact, the nuances of emotions rendered and the evolution of the story kept us constantly guessing and bantering about the action and possible outcomes.
Mini-Review: Good classic science fiction. Suspend disbelief for some unlikely speculative cloning science. Gripping emotional, psychological, & philosophical drama. I enjoyed Sam Rockwell again in this film.
Mini-Review: Coming of age quest fantasy set within a lush surrealistic dreamscape. Outstanding visual feast.
Mini-Review: Very good mishmash of great sci fi themes combined with intriguing setting and social history baggage of Johannesburg, SA. It's a violent, gross-out film--but with a good story.
Mini-Review: "Die Hard" in a mall except with unfunny, unappealing hero and absolutely no Alan Rickman. Boooooo!
