64 The Contract (2006) - Dec 16, 2007
Mini-Review: Woah. How did Freeman or Cusack every get conned into this one. Totally forgettable action thriller that would have gone straight to video if not for its A-listers.
76 Balls of Fury (2007) - Dec 16, 2007
Mini-Review: Silly 'n' slapstick, but with smarts and heart and canny subversions of stereotypes (like Christopher Walken's surprise harem). And it's Christopher Walken. And ping pong! I was reluctant to see it after being so horribly burned on Superbad, which forced me to spend time with a dickhead idiot and tried in vain to straddle gross absurdity and poignant realism, but Balls restored my faith in the genre. It owns its crass whimsy and delights in it with great characters.
40 The Pink Panther (2006) - Dec 16, 2007
Mini-Review: Practically unwatchable.
78 Breaking and Entering (2006) - Dec 16, 2007
78 Who Killed the Electric Car? (2006) - Dec 16, 2007
Mini-Review: The kind of documentary to make you really, really angry at bureaucracy and petty politicking and the oil industry. Smart, savvy, funny and completely infuriating. Also: I want one.
35 Planet Terror (2007) - Dec 16, 2007
Mini-Review: Was this a joke? When your sly ironic shout-out to b-movie rubbish is indiscernable from real b-movie rubbish, you have a problem.
76 Music and Lyrics (2007) - Dec 16, 2007
Mini-Review: Lighthearted candyfloss, very entertaining and the parody of the music industry and pop lyrics was spot on.
78 The Brave One (2007) - Dec 16, 2007
Mini-Review: Very, very uncomfortable portrayal of crime and violence. Coming from a society where this level of crime is a daily occurence and you don't need to go looking for it, I was squirming in my seat and at one point blinking back tears of outrage.
46 Death Proof (2007) - Dec 16, 2007
Mini-Review: Meh. Good soundtrack. B-movie crap. I'm all for girl power but a bunch of make-up girls getting all gung-ho about revenge and suddenly breaking out the kung-fu killing skills? The lapdance scene was very creepy and uncomfortable. Endless waffling dialogue so tedious it could only have been real (I can imagine it being transcribed by Tarantino chilling in a bar and listening in on conversations, congratulating himself on his genius). Miss.
65 30 Days of Night (2007) - Dec 16, 2007
Mini-Review: Terrifying right up until the moment we see the vampires and, worse, they open their mouths to speak. They lapse into cartoonish villainy and pseudo-Zenisms like "what is broken must be broken". Beautifully shot though and blood on snow (& oil on snow) is real pretty.
