100 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) - Oct 02, 2010
Mini-Review: A true masterwork. While slow paced, the cinematography is interesting and engaging enough to ward off the slow parts of the film. Little dialogue is spoken, but that along with the pace make for a highly interesting piece of science fiction. The real winning parts of 2001 are easily the special effects and imagery; one of the most beautifully shot films to grace the screen. It's understandable that the slow pace may put some off, but if any sci-fi film should have got an Oscar, this is it.
85 Knife in the Water (1962) - Apr 15, 2011
Mini-Review: Roman Polanski's debut thriller steeps in a tense, sensual undertone driven by a minimalist style, accompanied by strong performances and striking photography. What stands out is a film seemingly devoid of plot and is merely a string of events. Knife in the Water is engaging due to the mystique surrounding the story and the subtle tension that is introduced with the opening score; remaining present till the films end. That being said, it does drag a bit and the tension never fully manifests.
95 Children of Men (2006) - Sep 24, 2010
Mini-Review: To start, the cinematography is some of the best in recent memory and complements the grit and grime of the art direction very well; creating an intense atmosphere. Children of Men touches on plenty of themes, but on a technical level appears to be an exercise in escalating intensity. A welcome enough script and powerhouse performances coupled with strong direction and the aforementioned cinematography make Children of Men one of the finer and more interesting sci-fi films in the last 20 years.
90 Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse (1991) - Oct 24, 2010
Mini-Review: Provides a lot of insight into the creation of one of the best films I've ever seen. Always interesting, the documentary gives us a look inside the mind of Coppola as he's trying to keep his film together by the threads. Excellent documentary that will enhance the Apocalypse Now experience.
90 The Tenant (1976) - Jan 04, 2011
Mini-Review: Frightening imagery and a solid performance by Roman Polanski accompanied with his usual directorial excellence makes for a more than fine psychological thriller. Suffers from light pacing issues, but fine camerawork and despite being a tad nonsensical, a tense story about paranoia come together as one of Polanski's finest works. The Tenant is a borderline classic worth your time.
80 The American (2010) - Sep 26, 2010
Mini-Review: The American, is a beautifully shot, slow paced and well acted suspense drama about an a assassin hiding in Italy while completing his final assignment. Slow, well paced, but could have benefited from faster action sequences. The films intrigue lies not in the story itself, but the premise of seeing the day-to-day activities of a clearly lonely man doing what he does because he believes that he should do what he is best at. The American isn't exceptional, but is a drama worth taking a look at.
85 Waking Life (2001) - Jan 02, 2011
Mini-Review: Thought provoking, entertaining and undoubtedly gorgeous. Whether you dislike the philosophical talk or just plain dislike the films attempt at presenting the viewer with thought provoking ideas; it is something to contemplate and take into consideration. A visually stunning and thoughtful, non-linear film about being able to think beyond what you can sense. How deep it goes is dependent on you.
95 Boogie Nights (1997) - Oct 15, 2010
Mini-Review: Captivating cinematography, great performances, an appropriate and memorable soundtrack, but the shining star is writer/director, Paul Thomas Anderson's excellent screenplay. By far one of the most memorable films that I have seen and despite being a tad lengthy, Boogie Nights is almost completely engrossing. A film of consistent interest and visual panache; Anderson has crafted something stylish, dramatic, gritty, funny and wholly fantastic. Suffice to say, this is required viewing.
95 The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) - Oct 02, 2010
Mini-Review: A Clint Eastwood masterpiece. Excellent cinematography, well written and exceptionally paced; one of his finest feats as a filmmaker. Eastwood portrays his character as the tough badass who has lost it all admirably, but his true talent shines through in his directing. While Josey Wales contains all the action and gunslinging you have come to expect, it also has a story to tell. A man who lost everything to save those with nothing. A fine Western, a good story and a truly great film.
90 The Social Network (2010) - Oct 10, 2010
Mini-Review: Masterfully shot, written and acted. The Social Network is a collaboration between Fincher, Sorkin and Eisenberg who have crafted something special out of an ordinary story. The film is less about "Facebook" itself and more about Mark Zuckerberg and his relationship with the people that made his project come to life. The title of the film should sum up what it's about, how our generation is not defined by Facebook specifically, but by the explosion of the internet and having to stay connected.
