Bio: I like movies.

My rating system:
0-19: Complete failure in every respect. An awful and incompetently made movie.
20-39: Below average. I didn't like it and thought it was a waste of my time.
40-59: Very average. Not too bad or too good. Very forgettable.
60 and above are good movies, with 80 and above being at or approaching the masterpiece level.
A 100 indicates a film that I think is completely perfect and one of the greatest films ever made.
Recent Rankings
74 Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) - Jan 29, 2012
Mini-Review: All the hate for this movie is unjustified.
73 Melancholia (2011) - Jan 29, 2012
Mini-Review: A captivating film, but it has some structural problems in terms of how it creates its characters, and there is an excess of them. The tone of the cinematography is also a bit inconsistent, and I don't quite understand the praise for Dunst, as she was merely adequate. Nonetheless, von Trier has made a unique film here that provides plenty to think on.
66 Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) - Jan 01, 2012
Mini-Review: The movie is quite successful as a tongue in cheek action flick. Much of its humor arises from near-parody of action cliches coupled with fairly well written banter. All characters are not equally well developed and utilized, though, which hold the film back a bit.
66 Hugo (2011) - Jan 01, 2012
Mini-Review: Though it is truly wondrous at times, it also has major problems. The screenplay is just far too disorganized and creates tension in all the wrong ways, yielding a dull movie that loses its message. The high points are amazing, though, with perfectly-shot pure joy.
75 The Future (2011) - Dec 09, 2011
Mini-Review: Loved the buried girl scenes, the dancing scenes. Unsettling, funny, and resonant.
68 Between the Folds (2008) - Nov 05, 2011
Mini-Review: Neat subject matter. Horrible narration.
43 X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) - Oct 17, 2011
Mini-Review: Not sure why this gets made out to be so awful. It's a cliche and bland action movie, but it's no worse than the first X-Men movie and only marginally worse than than the others. Dialogue is rushed and opportunities for interesting character development are frequently missed. The action is vaguely entertaining, though. Acting is adequate but uninspired.
45 Chalk (2006) - Sep 24, 2011
Mini-Review: Meh. The structure is very poorly thought out. The fantasy sequence destroys the mockumentary conceit, and many of the segments are just needless (such as the Spelling Hornet). The editing definitely needs work. It's essentially a poorly done version of The Office, and it is insufficiently funny. On top of that, what little serious content is attempted is amazingly trite.
52 Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) - Aug 08, 2011
Mini-Review: Bland, as with most of the other pre-Avengers origins stories that have been churned out recently. It's entertaining enough, but doesn't stick with you at all. Direction is competent aside from a few pacing flaws, it's just that the film doesn't really have much substance.
92 Life on Earth (1979) - Jul 21, 2011
Mini-Review: Attenborough, through this series and two other (non-nature) ones that he helped produce, defined what this format could be. It is masterfully organized and shot, and some moments are truly amazing. Though a few parts are a bit dated, most notably certiain parts concerning the evolution of dinosaurs, birds, and man, it is still fully engrossing.
